Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
To update the payment method and renew the Microsoft subscription after ID theft, follow these steps:
- Update the payment method on the Microsoft account:
- Go to Payment options at https://account.microsoft.com/billing/payments and sign in with the Microsoft account used for the subscription.
- Find the existing card or payment method and select View or edit card.
- Update the name, billing address, expiration date, and CVV to match the new, valid card, then select Save.
- If the old card should no longer be used, add the new card first, then remove the old one from the list of payment options.
- If the subscription payment is past due:
- Go to Services & subscriptions at https://account.microsoft.com/services and sign in.
- Find the subscription marked as past due and select Pay now.
- Confirm that the updated payment method is selected, then choose Next to complete the payment.
- If the subscription has recurring billing turned on and the payment method needs to be changed for future renewals:
- In Services & subscriptions, find the active subscription and select Manage.
- Select Change how you pay.
- Choose the updated payment method from the list, or select Add a new way to pay and follow the prompts.
- If the renewal text or email mentioned multi-factor authentication (SCA/PSD2):
- Follow the instructions in that message to authenticate with the bank (for example, entering a code sent by the bank).
- If the code does not arrive, check the phone number and email registered with the bank, check junk mail, verify connectivity, and use Resend code.
- If the code still fails, contact the bank to confirm and update the contact information for the card.
- Because there was ID theft in February, also work with the bank to:
- Confirm that only the new, valid card is active.
- Block any old or compromised cards from further Microsoft charges.
If there are any unrecognized or fraudulent Microsoft charges, contact the bank to dispute them and request a chargeback, and contact Microsoft Support via the official support site for billing review.
