Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
The 30-day restriction and the need to verify using existing security info cannot be bypassed or expedited, even by support. When all security info is removed or replaced, the account goes into a 30-day restricted state specifically to prevent unauthorized takeovers.
Given the situation (only a landline on file and a pending security info change), the available options are:
- Check if the account is in “security info change is still pending” state and use the built-in options
- Sign in to the Security page for the Microsoft account: https://account.live.com/proofs/Manage
- If the Your security info change is still pending window appears, look for one of these links:
- cancel this request – use this only if the security info removal was initiated intentionally and there is still access to the previous security proofs. Cancelling stops the 30‑day change and restores the old security info.
- let us know – use this if the change was not made personally and the account may be compromised. This routes through the “unauthorized change” flow.
- If neither option can be completed because the only method is a non-SMS landline, the 30‑day process cannot be overridden.
- Understand what can still be done during the 30‑day pending period
While the account is restricted:
- It is still possible to sign in and use most Microsoft services such as Outlook.com, OneDrive, Skype, Xbox, etc.
- It is possible to:
- View order history
- Make purchases from the Microsoft Store
- Manage subscriptions
- Update billing or mailing address
- It is not possible to:
- Update payment options (e.g., change credit card info)
- Update the password
- Access parental controls
- Update account aliases If two-factor verification was turned on, access to these sensitive areas is blocked entirely until the 30 days pass or the pending request is cancelled from the security page.
- If security info was lost but password is known (for future prevention)
For future, once access is fully restored and the 30‑day period is over:
- Go to the Advanced security options page (via the account security settings).
- Use Add a new way to sign in or verify to add a mobile phone, alternate email, or an authenticator app.
- Only after adding a new method, remove outdated ones (such as a landline), and avoid removing all security info at once to prevent another 30‑day restriction.
There is no supported way to have a human override or shorten the 30‑day security-info-change pending period. The only immediate actions available are those on the Your security info change is still pending page (cancel this request / let us know) and using whatever access is still allowed during the restriction to manage billing and services.
