Hello

Do you just need the instruction or do you actually run into issue updating the payment method?

If you just need the instruction, the AI answer gives the steps how to do that.

However, if you run into issue changing it, a few key things to keep in mind - If you have moved country, and your payment method is now from a new country compared to that used to pay for the subscription, then you cannot change it. It will require letting the subscription expire (turn off auto renewal), and then subscribe to a new one using the new payment method.

To change the payment method for a Microsoft 365 subscription, use one of these paths depending on the type of account.

For personal Microsoft 365 subscriptions (consumer account)

    1. Go to Services & subscriptions at https://account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the subscription.
    2. Find the Microsoft 365 subscription in the list and select Manage.
    3. Select Change how you pay.
      • If Change how you pay does not appear, recurring billing is likely turned off and the current term is already paid.
    4. In the list of payment options, either:
      • Select an existing payment method, or
      • Select Add a new way to pay and follow the instructions to add a new card or payment option.
    5. If there is a past-due balance, select Pay now first, then update or add the payment method as prompted.

    Notes:

    • For prepaid Microsoft 365 subscriptions, the payment method for the current term cannot be changed. When it expires, a new subscription can be purchased using an updated payment method.
    • To use a prepaid subscription code instead of recurring billing, turn off recurring billing on the existing subscription and redeem the code after the current term expires.

For Microsoft 365 business accounts (admin center)

If managing a Microsoft 365 business subscription as an admin:

    Add a new payment method

    1. Go to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
    2. In Simplified view: select Products > View payment methods. In Dashboard view: go to Bills & payments and select the Payment methods tab.
    3. Select Add a payment method.
    4. Choose the payment type (if alternate options are available), complete the Add payment method form, and select Save.
    5. Move subscriptions or billing profiles to this new payment method if it should be used for existing subscriptions.

Replace the payment method used for subscriptions/billing profiles

    1. In the admin center, go to Bills & payments > Payment methods (or Products > View payment methods in Simplified view).
    2. For the payment method to change, select the More actions (three dots) button and choose Replace.
    3. In the Replace payment method wizard, under Choose payment method to move subscriptions:
      • Select Use another payment method and pick an existing one, or
      • Select Add a payment method and enter details for a new one.
    4. Review the current and new payment methods and the associated subscriptions/billing profiles.
    5. Select Replace payment method, then Close.

Edit details of an existing card

    1. In the admin center, go to Bills & payments > Payment methods.
    2. Select More actions (three dots) for the card, then Edit.
    3. Update the name, billing address, or expiration date. The card number itself cannot be changed.
    4. Enter the security code when prompted and select Save.

If a card is declined or cannot be added, verify the card details, ensure it is issued in the same country/region as the tenant, confirm sufficient funds, and contact the bank if issues persist.
