Good morning,

Yesterday my laptop went into BitLocker mode and I tried logging into my Microsoft account with getting a verification code via text, and it didn't work because I can't get codes from the Microsoft Authenticator app, since I'm not logged in. Can you please rest my Microsoft Authenticator log in, so I can reset my password via my phone number?

Microsoft support cannot directly reset Microsoft Authenticator for an account. Recovery depends on whether there is access to the backup/recovery methods and the backup account used by Authenticator.

    Use these steps and options:

    1. Try to restore Microsoft Authenticator
      • If Authenticator was backed up on the same device type (iOS→iOS or Android→Android), restore the accounts instead of resetting:
        • On Android: open Authenticator and select Restore from backup or Begin recovery before signing in. Then sign in with the personal Microsoft account used for backup so the credentials can be recovered.
        • On iOS: ensure iCloud Drive, iCloud Keychain, and iCloud Backup are enabled, reinstall Authenticator, then sign in to each account in Authenticator to complete the restore.
      • After restore, if an account shows Sign in to restore your account or Action required, tap it and sign in with the account password, then confirm email/phone as requested.
    2. If Authenticator backup cannot be restored
      • If the backup account (Microsoft account or iCloud account) used for Authenticator backup cannot be accessed, support agents cannot recover the Authenticator data.
      • In that case, accounts must be added to Authenticator again after access to the Microsoft account is regained. Guidance: How to add your accounts to Microsoft Authenticator.
    3. Regain access to the Microsoft account (to then reconfigure MFA)
      • If sign-in fails because of missing Authenticator codes and SMS/phone verification is not working in the flow being used, use the Microsoft account sign-in helper and recovery form to regain access using available methods (phone, email, or other security info). For blocked or inaccessible accounts, complete the recovery process as described in the Q&A examples:
        • Use the official recovery form at https://account.live.com/acsr starting with “I forgot my password,” then provide as much accurate information as possible.
        • If SMS is failing due to format or UI issues, try in a different browser or private/incognito session and ensure the full phone number is entered when requested.
      • Once access to the Microsoft account is restored, sign in to the Security section of the account and:
        • Add or update phone number and alternate email as security info.
        • Re-add Microsoft Authenticator as a sign-in method.
    4. If this is a work/school (tenant) account with MFA
      • If this is an Entra ID (Azure AD) work or school account and the only MFA method was Microsoft Authenticator, a tenant administrator must reset the MFA methods.
      • If there are other Global Admins: ask an admin to go to the user’s authentication settings and select Require re-register MFA so that MFA methods can be configured again. See: Manage user authentication options.
      • If this is the only Global Admin and access is lost, contact Microsoft’s Global Customer Service phone support and request the Data Protection team to help with admin account recovery, as described in the referenced Q&A.
    5. BitLocker unlock dependency
      • BitLocker recovery on the laptop depends on successfully signing in to the Microsoft account (if the recovery key is stored there). Once account access is restored via the steps above, sign in to the Microsoft account from another device, retrieve the BitLocker recovery key, and then unlock the laptop.

Microsoft cannot simply “reset” the Authenticator app for an account; recovery must go through restoring Authenticator from backup, using alternate security info (phone/email), or having a tenant admin reset MFA methods for work/school accounts.
