A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Because there is no other security method available and the Microsoft Authenticator code cannot be accessed, recovery depends on who manages the account:
- If this is a work or school (Microsoft Entra / Microsoft 365) account and there is an IT/admin team:
- Contact the organization’s help desk or Microsoft 365/Entra administrator.
- Ask them to reset the multi-factor authentication (MFA) settings or select Require re-register multifactor authentication for the account in the Microsoft Entra admin center. After that, sign-in will prompt to set up Authenticator again.
- If this is a work or school account and there is no other admin (the account is the only global admin on the tenant):
- A Microsoft Data Protection team request is required to regain access.
- Call Microsoft using the regional Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support line from the context and ask the frontline agent to open a ticket with the Data Protection team for an admin who lost access due to Authenticator.
- Clearly state that this is an Office 365/Microsoft 365 for business account, it is a company account, and there are no other administrators.
- If this is a personal Microsoft account and verification codes (SMS/email) also do not work:
- Use the sign-in helper tool from the context to troubleshoot sign-in issues: Sign-in helper.
- If still unable to receive any verification code and no alternate method is configured, choose another method if available or wait until access to the registered phone/email is possible. Support agents cannot send codes or change security info on personal accounts.
If an “Authentication did not complete” or similar message appears when trying to use Authenticator, also verify on the device that:
- Microsoft Authenticator is unlocked.
- Notifications are enabled and not silent.
- The app is updated to the latest version.
- The device has a working internet connection and correct date/time.
If none of the above options are possible and there is truly no alternate method (no SMS, no email, no backup admin), only Microsoft’s Data Protection process (for business/tenant admins) or the automated account recovery/sign-in helper (for personal accounts) can restore access.
