The error typically indicates that the payment system can’t validate the card details or the card itself isn’t an acceptable payment method for the service being used. Use the following checks and fixes:

    1. Verify card details exactly
      • Ensure cardholder name, card number, expiration date, CVV, and billing address (including city, state, and postal/ZIP code) match exactly what the bank has on file and what appears on the statement.
      • If entering a postal code, try both with and without spaces if applicable.
    2. Check card and region compatibility
      • The card must be issued in a country/region supported by the Microsoft service being used. Some services require the payment method to be from the same country/region as the account/tenant.
      • Some regions have restrictions:
        • Hong Kong SAR and Brazil: only credit cards are supported.
        • India: only Visa and Mastercard credit/debit cards are supported, and card storage for recurring payments is restricted by RBI regulation.
      • Prepaid and virtual cards are not accepted for many Microsoft services (including Azure and Marketplace scenarios).
    3. Confirm the card is active and has funds
      • Contact the bank/card issuer to confirm:
        • The card is active and not blocked.
        • International/online transactions are enabled.
        • There is sufficient available balance and no credit-limit or fraud blocks.
        • Recurring/merchant-initiated payments are allowed (if this is a subscription).
    4. Try updating/adding the payment method correctly
      • For Microsoft account scenarios: sign in to the Microsoft account billing “Payment options” page and use Add a new payment method, ensuring all details are entered correctly.
      • For Azure or Microsoft 365 business subscriptions, ensure the correct role (account administrator or appropriate billing role) is used and follow the documented steps to add or change the credit card.
    5. If the error persists across multiple valid cards
      • If multiple valid, bank-confirmed cards from the correct region all fail with the same message, there may be a back-end or account-specific issue.
      • In that case, contact the appropriate Microsoft billing/support channel for the product in use and provide:
        • Screenshot of the error (without exposing full card number or CVV).
        • Confirmation from the bank that the card is active and online/international transactions are allowed.
