Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Follow these steps to correctly activate Microsoft 365 (Office 365) on Windows and avoid sign-in/activation errors:
- Confirm the subscription and product type
- Go to the Microsoft account services page and verify that the subscription is active and that it is a Microsoft 365 plan that includes the Office desktop apps (for home use, this is typically Microsoft 365 Personal or Family, not Microsoft 365 Basic).
- If the subscription is expired or is a plan that does not include desktop apps, activation will fail and the apps will show as unlicensed.
- Redeem a new product key (if applicable)
If there is a new Microsoft 365 product key card or a key from an online purchase that has not yet been redeemed:- Go to Office.com/setup or https://microsoft365.com/setup.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that will own the subscription.
- Enter the product key and follow the on-screen prompts.
- After redemption, install Office from that same account if not already installed.
- Activate from within an Office app
- Open Word, Excel, or another Office app.
- If prompted to sign in, use the same Microsoft account that shows the active Microsoft 365 subscription.
- If already signed in but activation is failing, go to File → Account and use the option to update or change the license, then sign in again with the correct account.
- Fix common sign-in/activation issues
If activation still fails or sign-in issues occur:- Sign out and sign back in:
- Open a Microsoft 365 app (for example, Word).
- Select the name/profile icon at the top.
- Select Sign out.
- Close the app, reopen it, and select Sign in.
- Make sure to use the correct Work or School account for business subscriptions or the correct personal Microsoft account for home subscriptions.
- Check TLS 1.2 on older Windows versions (Windows 8.1 or earlier):
- Open Control Panel → Internet Options → Advanced.
- In the security section, ensure TLS 1.2 is checked, then select Apply and OK.
- Restart the device and try activation again.
- Proxy/firewall considerations: if behind a proxy or firewall, ensure Windows HTTP clients and the firewall are configured to allow Microsoft 365 activation endpoints as described in the referenced articles.
- Sign out and sign back in:
- Use the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter (Windows 10 or later)
- Run the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter from the Get Help app using the same Windows device where Microsoft 365 is installed.
- Follow the guided steps; when finished, apply any suggested fixes and retry activation.
If after these steps the apps still cannot activate, use the guided support for Office activation issues in a browser, which can automatically diagnose and fix many common activation problems.
