To use the IRCC/GCKey account again in Microsoft Authenticator, the account must be re-added from the IRCC/GCKey site itself. Authenticator cannot “recover” that account unless it was backed up and restored on the same platform, and even then, most work/school or web accounts require sign-in again.

Use these steps depending on the situation:

    1. If Authenticator backup/restore is available
      • On Android:
        1. Install Microsoft Authenticator on the new device.
        2. Open Authenticator and select Restore from backup or Begin recovery before signing in. If already signed in, sign out first. Learn how.
        3. Sign in with the same Microsoft personal account that was used for Cloud Backup.
        4. After restore, tap Sign in or Action required on the recovered account tiles and complete sign-in.
      • On iOS:
        1. Ensure iCloud Drive, iCloud Keychain, and iCloud Backup are enabled on the device.
        2. Install Microsoft Authenticator.
        3. Sign in to each account in Authenticator to complete the restore.
Note: For work/school and many web accounts, only the account name is restored. Actual sign-in must be completed again on the service (IRCC/GCKey) to fully re-enable MFA.
    2. If backup/restore is not available or does not bring back a working IRCC/GCKey entry
      • Go to the IRCC/GCKey website and sign in using whatever recovery options IRCC/GCKey provides (for example, backup codes, SMS, email, or their own account recovery).
      • Once signed in to IRCC/GCKey, go to its security or two-factor authentication settings.
      • Remove the old Authenticator configuration if needed, then choose the option to set up an authenticator app again.
      • When IRCC/GCKey shows a QR code or secret key, open Microsoft Authenticator, tap + to add an account, choose the appropriate account type, and scan the QR code or enter the key.
    3. If unable to restore Authenticator at all
      • If the problem is with the backup account (Microsoft account on Android, iCloud on iOS), use the appropriate recovery:
        • For Microsoft backup account issues, use the Microsoft account sign-in helper: Sign-in helper.
        • For iCloud access/sign-in problems, contact Apple Support using the links in the documentation.
      • If still unable to restore, accounts must be added again manually from each service’s security/MFA settings.

    Key points from the documentation:

    • Backup and restore only work between the same device type (iOS → iOS, Android → Android).
    • For many accounts, only the account name is restored; sign-in must be completed again.
    • If restore is not possible, the only supported path is to re-add the account from the service (IRCC/GCKey) itself.
