Signing in to OneDrive in a browser and in the OneDrive sync app are separate sign-in processes, so one can work while the other fails.

On the same PC, this typically happens for one of these reasons:

    1. Account or password issue in the sync app
The OneDrive sync client may be signed in with an old or wrong account, or stuck in a bad state, even though the browser sign-in works. Steps:
      1. Select the gray OneDrive icon with a line through it (or the OneDrive icon in the notification area).
      2. In the “Set up OneDrive” window, enter the same email address and password used to sign in on the web.
      3. If the password or username is not accepted:
        • For a personal Microsoft account, use the Microsoft account sign-in helper: Sign-in helper.
        • For a work or school account, reset the password using your organization’s process or contact the IT admin.
    2. Wrong or unexpected OneDrive account configured
The sync client may be configured with a different account than the one used in the browser. Steps:
      1. Select the OneDrive icon in the taskbar notification area.
      2. Select Help & Settings > Settings.
      3. On the Account tab, verify that the displayed account matches the one used in the browser. If not, sign out/unlink and sign back in with the correct account.
    3. Connectivity or firewall/VPN issue affecting only the sync client
The browser may reach OneDrive over ports and endpoints that the sync client cannot reach because of firewall, VPN, or ISP restrictions. Steps:
      1. Confirm that other internet access works.
      2. Temporarily disconnect from VPN or security software, or try using a mobile hotspot to see if OneDrive can sign in.
      3. If it works on a different network, check firewall or ISP settings and ensure required OneDrive URLs and ports are allowed.
    4. Corrupted OneDrive app or configuration
The local OneDrive client can be in a bad state even though the account itself is fine. Steps (Windows):
      1. Uninstall Microsoft OneDrive from Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
      2. Download and install the latest OneDrive client from the official download page.
      3. Open OneDrive and sign in with the same account used in the browser.

If the issue persists and a specific error code appears (for example, 0x8004de80, 0x8004de86, 0x8004de85, 0x8004de8a, or 0x8004def4), follow the corresponding error-specific guidance (unlink/relink, reset or reinstall OneDrive, or clear multiple identities) as described in the referenced articles.
