Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
Use the official self-service recovery options for a personal Microsoft/Outlook.com account. No one (including support agents or forum moderators) can bypass these steps or manually restore access.
- Start with the guided Sign-in Helper
- Go to the Sign-in Helper tool: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2298061 (for general sign-in issues) or https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2214157 (direct Sign-in Helper).
- Enter the email address of the personal account and follow the on-screen guidance. The tool will route to the correct flow (password reset, account recovery, hacked account, or “account not found”).
- If the password is wrong or no longer recognized
- Use Reset your password from the sign-in page.
- If verification options (email/phone) appear but are not accessible or not recognized, proceed to the Sign-in Helper and then to the account recovery form when offered.
- If the account may be hacked or compromised
- Use the hacked-account troubleshooter: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2196140 (Sign-in Helper for hacked account issues).
- This will either show self-help steps or offer a way to talk to an agent, depending on the scenario.
- If normal reset fails, use the Microsoft account recovery form
- Go to the account recovery form (ACSR) when prompted by the Sign-in Helper or directly at https://account.live.com/acsr.
- Before filling it out, review: Help with the Microsoft account recovery form.
- Requirements and tips:
- Provide a working alternate email that can receive messages; this is where Microsoft will send updates about the request.
- Submit the form from a device and location normally used to sign in to this account.
- Provide as many accurate details as possible (old passwords, contacts, subject lines, services used, etc.).
- Microsoft reviews the form and typically responds within 24 hours.
- If the daily submission limit is reached, wait until the next day before trying again. Additional attempts during a lockout window can extend the cooldown.
- If verification codes are not arriving or are blocked
- Follow the troubleshoot verification code issues guidance linked from the “I can’t sign in” article.
- Try again from a different browser, InPrivate/Incognito window, or different network if rate-limited.
- If the account shows as not existing or deleted
- If the error is “We couldn’t find an account with that username” or “account doesn’t exist,” use the Sign-in Helper tool.
- If the account has been inactive for more than two years, it may have been deleted and cannot be reopened.
- If all recovery attempts fail
- For a hacked/compromised account where security info was changed and the recovery form is unsuccessful, there is no alternative method to regain access. Support agents and moderators cannot override the automated recovery system or manually unlock the account.
- In that case, create a new Microsoft account and share the new email with family, friends, and financial contacts.
