I am locked out of my account

My account is requiring an authentication code to log into the app but I cannot access the code until I’m logged in. I’m stuck in this loop of not being able to access the code without logging in and I cannot log until the code is accessed. Help

To break the loop and regain access, follow these steps based on what is blocking authentication.

    1. If the issue is “Authentication did not complete” in Microsoft Authenticator Work through the common causes:
      • Make sure the Microsoft Authenticator app is unlocked on the phone so the prompt/code box can appear.
      • Check that notifications are enabled for Microsoft Authenticator and not set to silent. Also check SMS messages in case a text code arrived quietly.
      • Update to the latest version of Microsoft Authenticator from the app store.
      • Ensure the phone has a working internet connection. If needed, switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data and try again.
      • Confirm the device date and time are set correctly (automatic time is recommended).
      • If the problem is actually a forgotten password, use the Reset your password flow: Reset your password.
These steps address the “Authentication did not complete” error that can prevent codes or prompts from appearing.
    2. If verification codes (SMS/email) are not arriving
      • Go to the Security basics page and sign in if possible: https://account.microsoft.com/security
      • Select Update info.
      • Choose a verification method that still works, or select I don't have any of these to replace security info.
      • If using another Microsoft email (Outlook/Hotmail/Live/MSN) as the backup address, open a private/incognito browser window so both accounts can be signed in at once:
        1. In a privacy/InPrivate window, sign in to the account that is asking for the code.
        2. When prompted for the verification code, leave that window open.
        3. Open a second privacy/InPrivate window.
        4. Sign in to the alternate email account and get the code from the Microsoft account team email.
        5. Go back to the first window and enter the code.
If the account is locked or flagged for unusual activity, verification messages may not go through until the lock is resolved.
    3. If no method works and sign‑in is still blocked
      • Use the sign-in helper to diagnose common sign‑in issues: Sign-in helper.
      • If still locked out, contact Microsoft Support using any account that can sign in (even a new one): Contact Microsoft Support → describe that access is blocked by MFA/verification and no codes are reachable.
Note: Support agents cannot send verification codes or directly change security details; in some cases another method or waiting until the registered phone/email is accessible is required.

If this is a work/school (Microsoft 365) account and another global administrator exists, that admin can reset MFA for the user from Microsoft Entra ID → Users → select the user → Authentication methods → Require re-register multifactor authentication, which forces a fresh MFA setup on next sign‑in.
