A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
To break the loop and regain access, follow these steps based on what is blocking authentication.
- If the issue is “Authentication did not complete” in Microsoft Authenticator
Work through the common causes:
- Make sure the Microsoft Authenticator app is unlocked on the phone so the prompt/code box can appear.
- Check that notifications are enabled for Microsoft Authenticator and not set to silent. Also check SMS messages in case a text code arrived quietly.
- Update to the latest version of Microsoft Authenticator from the app store.
- Ensure the phone has a working internet connection. If needed, switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data and try again.
- Confirm the device date and time are set correctly (automatic time is recommended).
- If the problem is actually a forgotten password, use the Reset your password flow: Reset your password.
- If verification codes (SMS/email) are not arriving
- Go to the Security basics page and sign in if possible: https://account.microsoft.com/security
- Select Update info.
- Choose a verification method that still works, or select I don't have any of these to replace security info.
- If using another Microsoft email (Outlook/Hotmail/Live/MSN) as the backup address, open a private/incognito browser window so both accounts can be signed in at once:
- In a privacy/InPrivate window, sign in to the account that is asking for the code.
- When prompted for the verification code, leave that window open.
- Open a second privacy/InPrivate window.
- Sign in to the alternate email account and get the code from the Microsoft account team email.
- Go back to the first window and enter the code.
- If no method works and sign‑in is still blocked
- Use the sign-in helper to diagnose common sign‑in issues: Sign-in helper.
- If still locked out, contact Microsoft Support using any account that can sign in (even a new one): Contact Microsoft Support → describe that access is blocked by MFA/verification and no codes are reachable.
If this is a work/school (Microsoft 365) account and another global administrator exists, that admin can reset MFA for the user from Microsoft Entra ID → Users → select the user → Authentication methods → Require re-register multifactor authentication, which forces a fresh MFA setup on next sign‑in.
