A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Instagram accounts that were configured in Microsoft Authenticator on a lost phone can only be restored if a proper Authenticator backup was created on the same platform type and then restored on the new device.
For iOS devices, the following must have been done on the old phone before it was lost:
- iCloud Drive enabled.
- iCloud Keychain enabled.
- iCloud Backup enabled, with Authenticator turned on in the Saved to iCloud list.
- Authenticator updated to version 6.8.33 or later.
- Authenticator app opened at least once after backup was enabled.
If those conditions were met and the new phone is also iOS, try this on the new device:
- Uninstall the Microsoft Authenticator app.
- Reinstall Microsoft Authenticator from the store.
- Open the app and sign in with the same account that was used for backup.
- The backup should then appear and can be restored, including 3rd party accounts like Instagram that use one-time password codes.
If the backup does not appear after following these steps, or if the old phone was a different platform type (for example, Android instead of iOS), the Instagram entry in Authenticator cannot be restored from that backup. In that case, recovery must be done through Instagram’s own account recovery and security options to regain access and then reconfigure the Instagram account in Microsoft Authenticator on the new device.
