The email address is being used for two different account types: a personal Microsoft account (used for the Microsoft 365 Family subscription) and a separate work or school (business) account. These are distinct accounts even if they share the same email address, and sign-in or cancellation must be done against the correct account type.

To resolve the sign-in problem and keep the personal (Family) account while stopping use of the business one, follow these steps:

    1. Confirm which account is which
      • Go to https://account.microsoft.com and enter the email address.
      • If a password prompt appears, that email is a personal Microsoft account.
      • If a “Which account do you want to use?” screen appears, select either Work or school account or Personal account depending on which one needs to be accessed.
    2. If the sign-in prompt is confusing or keeps defaulting to the wrong account
      • Consider renaming the personal Microsoft account so it no longer uses the same email address as the business account.
      • Go to the Manage how you sign in section of the Microsoft account and either:
        • Add a new alias and make it the primary alias, or
        • Choose an existing alias and select Make primary.
      • This keeps the Family subscription on the personal account while freeing the original email address from conflicts with the business account.
    3. If the business account is tied to an organization
      • The user ID for Microsoft 365 for business is a work or school account assigned by the organization (for example, ******@contoso.com).
      • If the business subscription belongs to a company or school, contact that organization’s admin or billing owner and ask them to remove the account or cancel the license on their side.
    4. If the business account was created when joining another organization
      • If the email was used to join a Microsoft 365 business organization (for example via an invitation), it is possible to leave that organization:
        • Go to https://myaccount.microsoft.com/.
        • Sign in with the email address.
        • Select profile initials > View account > Manage organizations > Leave organization > Leave > OK.
      • After leaving, that organization will no longer manage the account or license.
    5. If sign-in to any Microsoft account fails entirely
      • Use the Sign-in Helper tool to diagnose whether the email is recognized and recover access.
      • If the message “We couldn’t find an account with that username” appears, verify spelling and domain or check whether the account was closed.

If cancellation requires access to billing for the business subscription and sign-in still fails after these steps, direct contact with Microsoft account/billing support is required so they can locate and cancel the business subscription without affecting the personal Family subscription.
