I bought a licence for Office 365 and I have a confirmation email but the licence is not being picked up on my account and I cannot sign in. Sometimes even the account cannot log in and when I try to recover I am told there is not account associated with that email address

Follow these steps in order, based on the symptoms described (license not linked and sometimes “no account associated with that email”):

    1. Confirm the correct account and that it actually exists
    • Go to the Microsoft account sign-in helper and recovery flows described in “I can't sign in to my Microsoft account”:
      • If the password is forgotten, use Reset your password.
      • If the email/username is forgotten, use Look up your Microsoft account.
      • If the sign-in page says “We couldn't find an account with that username” or “account doesn't exist”, use the Sign-in Helper tool linked in that article.
    • If the account has not been used for more than two years, it may have been deleted and cannot be reopened.
    1. Check whether the license is actually associated with the signed-in account
    • Once sign-in works, go to the Subscriptions page as described in “Unlicensed Product and activation errors in Office”:
      • Sign in at the Subscriptions page with the same email address used to buy the license.
      • Verify that the Microsoft 365 or Office product appears there.
      • If the product is not listed, that email address is not associated with the license, even if it received a confirmation email. Try all personal email addresses that might have been used at purchase.
    1. Distinguish between home and business products
    • If the product is a Microsoft 365 for home subscription, it must be linked to a personal Microsoft account (the email used when buying or activating it).
    • If it is a Microsoft 365 for business product (for work or school), the license is normally assigned by the organization and uses a work or school account. In that case, confirm with the organization’s admin that the license is assigned to the correct user account.
    1. If Office desktop apps say “no license associated with this account”
    • After confirming that the subscription is active and visible under Subscriptions, sign out of Office apps and sign back in using exactly the same account shown on the Subscriptions page.
    • If activation still fails, follow the Unlicensed Product and activation errors in Office steps:
      • Check for multiple copies of Office installed and remove extras.
      • Confirm the subscription has not expired.
      • Then use the version-specific activation troubleshooting from that article.
    1. If sign-in problems persist
    • If sign-in to Microsoft 365 or Office on the web fails, use the Sign-in helper mentioned in “Sign in to Microsoft 365” under “Can't sign in to Microsoft 365 or Office”. The tool will:
      • Ask for the email or phone being used.
      • Detect common account issues and provide guided steps.

If, after these steps, the account still cannot be found or the license does not appear under any of the possible email addresses, direct support from Microsoft (with the purchase confirmation details) is required to investigate how the license was associated.
