Follow these steps to get back into the account when the PIN, password, and verification code are not working or not being received:
- Reset the account password
- Go to the Microsoft account recovery page and choose Recover your account.
- Enter the email, phone number, or Skype name used to sign in.
- Follow the prompts to receive a security code and set a new password.
- Detailed steps are in My username and password have stopped working.
- Fix issues with not receiving verification codes
- Make sure the verification code is being sent to the correct email (primary alias or a configured security email).
- Check the junk/spam folder for messages from
@accountprotection.microsoft.com. - If using SMS:
- Confirm the phone number is a mobile number, not VOIP.
- Ensure the phone is not blocking texts from unknown numbers.
- Clear SMS inbox if it is full.
- Avoid repeated or excessive requests for codes; this can cause a temporary block where codes are not sent.
- If there is unusual activity or heavy compromised traffic from the region, Microsoft may temporarily delay or block code delivery; this usually resolves automatically after some time.
- Check and update security info (when able to sign in)
- Sign in to the Security basics page.
- Select Update info.
- Confirm that the phone number and email listed for verification are correct.
- If none of the listed methods work, choose I don't have any of these to replace security info.
- If the account is locked or rate-limited
- If too many attempts have been made (password resets, code requests, recovery form submissions), wait for the lockout period (typically up to 24 hours) before trying again.
- When trying again, use a familiar device, browser (preferably InPrivate/Incognito), and network.
- If still unable to sign in
- Use the Sign-in helper tool to diagnose sign-in issues.
- For additional technical help, go to Contact Microsoft Support, select Get Help, then Contact Support and choose the Microsoft account/sign-in category.
- Note that support agents cannot send verification codes, password reset links, or directly change account details for security reasons.
Once the Microsoft account password is successfully reset and sign-in works in a browser, use that updated password on the Xbox. If the PIN on the Windows 11 device is not recognized but the account password works, remove and re-add the PIN after signing in with the password.
