I have a Personal Microsoft 365 subscription. I want to set up <Mod remove PII> @terayoncapital.com properly but the domain appears to be in an old/unmanaged tenant. Password recovery defaults to my personal account and says talk to administrator. How do I take over or release the domain?

The domain is in an unmanaged ("shadow") Microsoft Entra/Microsoft 365 tenant created by self-service signup. To take it over and then use it with the correct account, perform an internal admin takeover, then (if desired) remove the domain from that tenant and add it to the intended one.

Follow these steps:

Create a user in the unmanaged tenant via Power BI
1. Go to the Power BI site: https://powerbi.com.
2. Select Start Free (then Start free trial if prompted).
3. Sign up using an address on the affected domain, for example ******@terayoncapital.com.
4. When asked, enter the verification code sent to that address and complete sign-up.
Create the admin account for that unmanaged tenant
1. After entering the verification code, a page appears to create a new account.
2. Fill in the username and password fields for the account that will be used as admin.
Run the admin takeover wizard and become admin
1. After the account is created, open the Microsoft 365 admin center by selecting the admin center icon or going to https://admin.cloud.microsoft.
2. The admin takeover wizard starts automatically.
3. Select Next and follow the steps to verify ownership of terayoncapital.com by adding the TXT record at the domain registrar, as instructed by the wizard.
4. When verification completes, the wizard shows You're now the admin. Select Go to the admin center.
5. At this point, the unmanaged tenant is converted to a managed tenant and the new account is Global Administrator.
Use or release the domain
- If the goal is to manage Microsoft 365 directly in this tenant, configure services there as needed.
- If the goal is to move the domain to a different Microsoft 365 tenant (for example, associated with the existing personal subscription), first remove the domain from this now-managed tenant, then add it to the target tenant. Use the “Remove a domain from another account” flow after the takeover is complete.

If the domain is blocking Azure subscription creation with the same email, completing this IT Admin Takeover also resolves the “unmanaged directory cannot be associated with an Azure subscription” issue.
