I install office 2016 - either by CD or online download.

Product installs successfully but when I go to activate the product it does not work.

Use the following checks and steps to resolve Office 2016 activation issues on a PC:

    1. Start activation correctly
    • Open any Office app (Word, Excel).
    • Accept the License Terms if prompted.
    • If the Microsoft Office Activation Wizard appears, follow the on‑screen prompts to complete activation.
    1. Make sure Windows is activated (for new/pre‑installed PCs) If Office came pre‑installed on a new PC and errors appear during activation (for example 0xC004F200 or messages about setting up Office):
    2. Ensure the PC is connected to the Internet.
    3. On the Windows taskbar, in Type here to search, type Activation.
    4. Select See if Windows is activated (or Activation in results).
    5. Under Windows activation, confirm it shows Windows is activated.
    6. After Windows is activated, reopen Word or another Office app and follow the activation prompts again.
    7. Sign in with the correct account (for Microsoft account–based licenses) If Office shows Unlicensed Product or similar:
    8. When prompted to sign in, use the same Microsoft account that was used to purchase or redeem Office 2016.
    9. If unsure which account is linked, sign in to the Subscriptions page and verify that Office 2016 (or the relevant one‑time purchase/plan) appears there. If it does not, that email address will not work for activation.
    10. Check for multiple Office installations Multiple Office versions on the same PC can cause activation conflicts.
    • Go to Windows Settings > Apps and check if more than one Office version is installed (for example, a pre‑installed Microsoft 365 trial plus Office 2016).
    • Uninstall any extra or trial Office versions, then restart the PC and try activating Office 2016 again.
    1. If reinstalling or moving Office 2016 to another device For one‑time purchases (Home & Student, Home & Business, Professional):
    • These are licensed for a single computer. If being moved to a different computer or reinstalled after hardware changes, activation may report that the maximum number of activations has been reached.
    • In that case, activation by phone may be required. Use the phone number for the region from the article linked in Fixes or workarounds for recent Office installation or activation issues and stay on the line until connected to a support agent.
    1. If activation still fails
    • Follow the troubleshooting flow in Unlicensed Product and activation errors in Office, starting with confirming the correct account, checking subscription status (if applicable), and then using the Office 2016–specific activation troubleshooting steps.
