Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
Several things can prevent Microsoft verification codes and other one‑time codes from arriving, even when normal email works.
For Microsoft verification codes specifically:
- Check the correct mailbox and junk folder
- Microsoft verification codes are only sent to the primary alias or to an email/phone configured as a verification method.
- Codes sent by email come from an
@accountprotection.microsoft.comaddress. Check Junk/Spam and any rules/folders that might move these messages. - Mark
@accountprotection.microsoft.comas a trusted/safe sender so future codes go to the Inbox.
- Confirm the security info on the account
- Sign in to the Security basics page: https://account.microsoft.com/security
- Select Update info.
- Verify that the email address and phone number listed are correct (no extra characters like
@hotmail.nl.). If something is wrong, choose a method that works or select I don't have any of these to replace the security info.
- Avoid repeated resend attempts
- Excessive or repetitive requests for codes (to email or phone) can cause Microsoft to temporarily block sending verification codes due to suspected unusual activity.
- If this happened, waiting some time before trying again is required; the block clears automatically.
- Consider regional or traffic issues
- Heavy compromised traffic from a region or temporary service issues can delay or block code delivery. These issues resolve automatically after some time.
- If using another Microsoft account as backup
- If the alternate email ends with
@outlook.com,@hotmail.com,@live.com, or@msn.com, signing into that second account to read the code can sign out the first account. - Use a private/incognito browser window:
- In one private window, sign in to the first account and request the code.
- Open a second private window, sign in to the alternate email account, read the code.
- Go back to the first window and enter the code.
- If the alternate email ends with
- If still not receiving codes
- Another verification method (different email or phone) may be needed, or it may be necessary to wait until access to the listed phone/email is available.
- Support agents cannot send verification codes, password reset links, or directly change account details for security reasons.
- If sign‑in itself is failing, use the sign‑in helper tool: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2300860
- For additional technical help, go to Contact Microsoft Support: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2300955 and select Get Help, then Contact Support if needed.
For non‑Microsoft sites (like the news site):
- Check Junk/Spam and any filters or rules.
- Verify the address used on that site is exactly the same as the Outlook/Hotmail address.
- If nothing arrives, contact that site’s support; they may be blocking or mis‑routing messages to
hotmail.nladdresses.
