How to turn off persistent pop-ups, dialogue and ToolTips in Word 365 in browser?

I'm working with a disabled individual who is dealing with an accessibility barrier in their work. Their department uses Word 365 and SharePoint to create shared documents, and they require people to use Track Changes. For this one individual, they keep running into problems where dialogue and ToolTips that do not disappear after using the mouse to navigate away. This only occurs in Word documents shared through SharePoint and using Track Changes. It's been happening since January. Is there a way to turn off ToolTips and the Track Changes dialogue boxes without turning off Track Changes? Right now, the individual is not able to contribute to shared documentation in their department.

I’m really sorry for the inconvenience this situation has caused you.

According to your question, unfortunately, Word’s Review UI in the browser doesn’t give an option to turn off the Track Changes “cards/pop-ups” while keeping Track Changes required. Compared to desktop Word, the web app has a limited Track Changes feature set and there is no direct setting to disable those Track Changes pop-ups.

For your situation, I suggest letting the individual using the Word desktop version via File > Info > Open in desktop. In Desktop app, Word has more control over how revisions are displayed. You can keep Track Changes On in the desktop app (which still meets the department requirement) and also optionally also disable ScreenTips in the desktop app (File > Options > General > under User interface options, set ScreenTip style to Don’t show ScreenTips) to reduce distractions.

While these options are not available today, I'm optimistic about future enhancements. I strongly recommend submitting your feedback through the Word · Community. So I just want to second this user's issue. It's incredibly overwhelming to have tooltips, approval/disapproval boxes, word suggestions, grammatical corrections, etc. pop-up every time I'm just trying to scan or edit a document with my cursor.

I've been completely throw off of my workflow and my productivity has taken a considerable toll as a result. Microsoft needs to address this issue for Word Online (and Desktop) and implement an option to disable all of those pop-ups, please.

ToolTips and the Track Changes cards/pop-ups in Word for the web cannot be disabled independently from Track Changes. In Word for the web, when a document is in Editing or Reviewing mode and Track Changes is on, selecting a tracked change shows a card with the collaborator’s suggested change and Accept/Reject options; this is by design and there is no separate setting in the product to turn those UI elements off while keeping Track Changes enabled.

For accessibility workarounds in Word for the web:

Use a screen reader and keyboard navigation instead of relying on mouse hover, which reduces unexpected persistent ToolTips and pop-ups. Word for the web is designed to work with Narrator, JAWS, and NVDA using keyboard shortcuts such as Ctrl+F6 to move focus in and out of the command areas.
Switch to full screen mode (F11) when using Word for the web; this can reduce some visual clutter and may make it easier for the user to focus on the document content.
If possible in the organization’s workflow, consider having the user work in the desktop Word client with Track Changes enabled (Review > Track Changes) and use screen-reader-oriented workflows, which are documented and tested for accessibility.
If the behavior is new since January and appears buggy (for example, pop-ups truly not dismissing when focus moves), capture details and contact the Microsoft Disability Answer Desk for targeted accessibility support and potential escalation.

There is no documented setting in Word for the web to globally turn off ToolTips or Track Changes cards while leaving Track Changes on, so mitigation relies on accessibility tools (screen readers, keyboard navigation, full screen) and possibly using the desktop client instead of the browser when feasible.
