how do cancel my Microsoft 365 Apps for business subscription.

I have tried for two weeks to cancel my subscription. When I view the data in my account for things like billing it states "Something failed on out end. Try again later." It does show that I have a license but there isn't any way to cancel. I can't do anything in billing, like change the recurring charge to remove it.

Additionally, when I try the Support Assistant, it "Chat authentication has failed. "Auth Setup error."

Telephone support tells me to go to aka.ms/gethelpm365, which is useless documentation for my purpose. I just need out of the subscription.

Dear @Barry Burkhardt,

I understand how incredibly frustrating this situation is. You are experiencing two specific, known system errors:

  1. "Something failed on our end" in the Billing section: This is typically a server-side issue within Microsoft's billing infrastructure, not a problem with your computer or browser.
  2. "Chat authentication has failed": This is a separate authentication issue preventing you from reaching a support agent through the normal channels.

Because the self-service tools are failing and you cannot reach support through the standard portal, you need a direct workaround to get a support ticket created so a billing specialist can cancel the subscription for you.

As a member of the community support team, I’m limited in my ability to access or make changes within your administrator account. For security and privacy reasons, only Microsoft’s dedicated support team has the necessary tools and authorization to assist with account-level issues such as resetting or troubleshooting deep within your account.

Here is the most effective way to bypass the broken portal and get a support request filed:

Since you cannot access the "Help & Support" section in your current admin portal, you can create a temporary, free Microsoft 365 trial tenant. This gives you a working admin portal from which you can contact support about your original subscription.

  1. Open a Private/Incognito Browser Window: This prevents any conflicting sign-in issues from your current session.
  2. Start a Free Trial: Go to the Microsoft 365 plans page and select "Try for free" on any business plan (e.g., Business Basic). Follow the setup process to create a new, separate tenant account.
  3. Sign in to the New Admin Center: Once the trial is set up, go to admin.microsoft.com and sign in using the new administrator account you just created.
  4. Open a Support Ticket: Navigate to Support > Help & Support.
  5. Request a Call Back: In the support window, select the option for a callback rather than chat. Provide your current contact number.

Important: Once your original subscription is canceled, remember to go back to this new trial tenant and cancel the trial subscription to avoid being billed for it in the future.

If you prefer to try the phone again, there is a specific path designed to bypass the general robots that send you to the website.

Find the appropriate phone number for your region here: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support

To help you navigate the automated phone system (IVR), here’s an example of how the conversation might go:

  • IVR: What kind of problem are you concerned about?   You: Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
  • IVR: What kind of product do you use?   You: Office 365 for business
  • IVR: Education or business account?   You: For business
  • IVR: Are you an administrator?   You: Yes
  • IVR: Do you have another administrator in your organization?   You: No
  • IVR: Do you need a service request?   You: Yes

This should help you get connected to a live support agent who can assist you directly.

Note: Sometimes, you would hear the computer-generated voice at first, please kindly wait for it to end, and if an agent is available, you would be directed to them and get your support. During peak hours, there might be high call volumes, so I kindly ask for your patience as them work to assist everyone as quickly as possible.

If your organization's Office 365 Business/Education subscription is from a partner or reseller, and the global administrator is unable to open a service request on your end, contact the reseller's support provider to help open a service request on behalf of you instead.

The errors you are encountering are system-side issues that prevent you from managing your own billing. The method above is the most reliable way to get a support ticket created so a specialist can manually cancel the subscription for you. Please let me know if you need any clarification on the steps.
