A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
A new QR code is generated from the account or security portal of the service being protected, not from the old Authenticator app. To move Authenticator to a new phone, a new QR code must be created and scanned on the new device.
For a personal Microsoft account:
- On a computer, go to the Microsoft account Security page: https://account.microsoft.com/security and sign in.
- Select Manage how I sign in to view sign-in methods.
- Select Add a new way to sign in or verify.
- Choose Use an app.
- If Authenticator is already installed on the new phone, select Set up a different Authenticator app and then Next to display a new QR code.
- On the new phone, open Microsoft Authenticator, tap the + icon, select Personal account, then Scan a QR Code, and scan the QR code shown on the computer.
For non-Microsoft accounts (Google, etc.):
- Sign in to the account’s security or two-step verification page in a browser.
- Start the process to add or set up an Authenticator app; this will display a QR code.
- On the new phone, open Microsoft Authenticator, tap the + icon, choose Other account, and scan the QR code shown on the site.
If access to the account portal is blocked by MFA and there is no alternative sign-in method (such as SMS, email, or another admin), an administrator or Microsoft support/Data Protection team must reset MFA for the account before a new QR code can be obtained.
