Switching from Microsoft 365 Personal to Family does not change where OneDrive files are stored or require reinstalling the apps, so the issue is almost certainly account-related on the new laptop.

Use these steps to regain access:

    1. Confirm which Microsoft account has the files
      • On the old PC (or any device where the files are visible), open OneDrive and check the account:
        • Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area.
        • Select OneDrive Help and Settings > Settings.
        • Go to the Account tab and note the email address shown. This is the account that owns the files.
      • The Family subscription only extends benefits to additional people; it does not move files between accounts.
    2. Make sure the same account is set up on the new PC
      • On the new laptop, search for OneDrive from the taskbar and open it.
      • If OneDrive Setup appears, sign in with the same Microsoft account identified in step 1 (the one that originally had Microsoft 365 Personal and where the files are stored).
      • If OneDrive is already running:
        • Select the OneDrive cloud icon > OneDrive Help and Settings > Settings.
        • Go to the Account tab and verify the email address.
        • If it shows a different account (for example, a Family member account), select Add an account and sign in with the original personal account that has the files. Note that only one personal account can be used per OneDrive sync client profile, so if needed, unlink the wrong account first.
    3. Sync and access the files
      • After signing in with the correct account, choose the folders to sync when prompted.
      • Open File Explorer and select OneDrive in the left pane to see and open the files.
    4. If OneDrive says “make sure you’re signed in to personal”
      • This message usually appears when the OneDrive client is signed in with a different type of account than the one that owns the files (for example, a Family member’s account or a work/school account).
      • Ensure the OneDrive client is signed in with the original personal Microsoft account that owns the storage and files, even though the subscription has been upgraded to Family.

The subscription switch (Personal → Family) does not require reinstalling Office apps and does not delete or move OneDrive content; access depends entirely on signing in with the same Microsoft account that previously held the Personal subscription.
