A Microsoft file hosting and synchronization service.
For a personal OneDrive account, only the options documented in the service are available; there is no separate “backend” recovery beyond those.
Use these steps in order:
- Verify items in the OneDrive Recycle bin
- Go to the OneDrive website and sign in with the same Microsoft account.
- In the left navigation, select Recycle bin.
- Scroll through and confirm whether the deleted folders/files from Tuesday 9:13 PM are present.
- Select the items (or select all) and choose Restore.
- Check local PC Recycle Bin / Trash
If files were deleted from the synced OneDrive folder on the PC:
- On Windows: open Recycle Bin, select the items, right‑click, and choose Restore.
- On Mac: open Trash, select items, right‑click, and choose Put back. Note: Deleted online‑only files do not appear in the PC’s Recycle Bin or Trash.
- Use “Restore your OneDrive” (if subscribed to Microsoft 365)
If a Microsoft 365 subscription is active, OneDrive has a point‑in‑time restore feature:
- Use Restore your OneDrive to roll the entire OneDrive back to a time just before 9:13 PM on Tuesday. This undoes deletions, overwrites, and corruption within the last 30 days.
- Be aware: files or folders created after the restore point will be moved into the OneDrive Recycle Bin and can be restored individually if needed.
- Understand permanent deletion limits
- For personal accounts, items in the OneDrive Recycle bin are automatically and permanently deleted 30 days after deletion.
- If files have already been permanently deleted from the OneDrive Recycle Bin, they cannot be recovered by Microsoft.
- If restore shows “items restored” but folders look empty
- Confirm that the correct account is signed in (no secondary Microsoft account).
- Use Search everything on the OneDrive website to search by file type, name fragments, or keywords to see if content was restored to unexpected locations.
If the content is not in the OneDrive Recycle Bin, not visible after a OneDrive restore, and not present in the local PC’s Recycle Bin/Trash, there is no further Microsoft-side recovery mechanism for a personal OneDrive. At that point, only third‑party file recovery tools on the local device (if the data was originally stored there) may help, and recovery is not guaranteed.
