A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
The message indicates that the phone-based verification for the account is failing. Use these steps to troubleshoot and regain access:
- Check for temporary blocks or unusual activity
- Excessive or repetitive verification attempts (SMS or calls) can trigger a temporary block where codes or verification attempts are rejected.
- If there have been many recent attempts, stop trying repeatedly and wait up to 24 hours before trying again.
- Try another verification method
- On the sign-in screen, choose Other verification options (or similar) and select a different method already configured on the account (for example, email, Microsoft Authenticator app, or another phone number).
- If another method works, sign in and then review and update the phone number in Security info for the account.
- Validate the phone number and type
- Ensure the number is a mobile phone capable of receiving SMS or calls; Voice-over-IP (VoIP) numbers cannot be used for verification.
- Confirm the country/region code and number are correct in the account’s security info.
- Check for SMS delivery issues
- Make sure the device can receive SMS or calls from Microsoft numbers (often US-based). Remove any block on texts or calls from unknown numbers.
- Verify that the SMS inbox is not full and that the messaging app is working correctly.
- If the account is blocked with “Try another verification method”
- The account or specific method may be blocked due to unusual activity, high volume of requests, or traffic from a risky location.
- Switch networks (for example, from Wi‑Fi to mobile data) and try again.
- If multiple methods fail and the error persists after waiting (up to several days), use the Microsoft sign-in helper linked in the documentation to identify the issue and available support options.
- If no method works and this is an admin/partner account
- If this is the only admin account for the tenant and all verification methods fail, contact Microsoft support so the Microsoft Data Protection team can verify identity and reset the sign-in/MFA configuration for the account.
Once access is restored, add at least two working verification methods (for example, mobile SMS and Microsoft Authenticator) and verify that the phone number is correct and not VoIP.
