Not able to open Embedded documents Sharepoint document library View mode

Hi All,

In SharePoint document library,

Few of the documents have embedded documents which i am not able to open when the document is in view mode.

There are Visio-flows embedded within which are not at all clear to view when the document is in view mode.

Please let me know if this is a known limitation.

Appreciate your quick response. Just wanted to confirm whether it was a known limitation. So according to your conclusion, The embedded documents or visio files can be opened only through desktop apps and not in web view.

Regarding the visio files looking blurred in the docs, I went through the content from below url

But, it doesnt say whether it will resolve the bluriness in the web view or read-only mode. Can you please confirm me on this?

Hi,

Sorry for late response. As my previous answer, Microsoft’s own feature comparison shows “Embedded Objects” are desktop‑only; the web apps provide limited or read‑only rendering and direct you to Open in desktop app for full fidelity.

The visio files looking blurred in the docs has a lot of reason. To have better support, I recommend you create a support ticket in Admin center so a back-end engineer can review and give you a correct answer.

However, we have observed behavior that seems inconsistent with this limitation and would appreciate further clarification.

In our environment, users with View-only permissions were previously able to open and interact with embedded OLE objects within PowerPoint presentations stored in SharePoint Online. This functionality appears to have stopped working approximately two weeks ago.

Our testing has shown the following:

Embedded objects open successfully when the presentation is downloaded and opened locally.

Users with Edit permissions can still open the embedded objects directly from SharePoint using PowerPoint Desktop.

Users with View permissions can no longer open the embedded objects when opening the same presentation via Open in App.

No changes have been made to the PowerPoint files themselves.

Based on this, the issue appears to be related to how SharePoint Online and Microsoft 365 Apps now handle files opened from SharePoint in a read-only state, rather than a limitation of the embedded objects themselves.

Can Microsoft confirm whether there have been any recent changes to:

SharePoint Online document opening behavior

PowerPoint Desktop integration with SharePoint

OneDrive sync/Open in App functionality

Microsoft 365 Apps security policies related to embedded OLE objects
