A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
For this kind of MFA lockout, the next steps depend on whether the account is a work/school (Microsoft Entra / Azure AD / Microsoft 365) account or a personal Microsoft account.
- If this is a work or school account (Microsoft 365 / Entra ID):
- Multiple failed or repeated MFA attempts can trigger protection mechanisms that temporarily block verification. In that case:
- Wait before trying again and avoid repeated attempts, or
- Use a different MFA method if one is configured (for example, office phone, alternate phone, or Microsoft Authenticator instead of SMS).
- If no alternative method works or is available, contact the organization’s IT administrator or help desk and ask them to:
- Check Microsoft Entra sign-in logs for blocked or risky sign-ins.
- Reset or re-register MFA for the user account (for example, using “Require re-register multifactor authentication” in the Entra admin center) so new methods can be configured.
- If the account is the only global admin and no one else can reset MFA, the tenant’s global admin must work with Microsoft Data Protection support via the regional customer service phone numbers so they can verify identity and reset the admin’s authentication methods.
- Multiple failed or repeated MFA attempts can trigger protection mechanisms that temporarily block verification. In that case:
- If this is a personal Microsoft account (Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live, MSN):
- Sign in to the Security basics page and use Update info to choose a verification method that still works, or select I don't have any of these to replace security info.
- If verification codes are not arriving and the account has been flagged for unusual activity or blocked, it may be necessary to:
- Try another verification method (alternate email instead of SMS, or vice versa).
- Try another network (switch between Wi‑Fi and cellular, or use a different Wi‑Fi network).
- Wait up to 24 hours (and, if needed, up to a week) without repeated attempts so any temporary block can clear.
- If prompted with a “Try another verification method” message, follow the guidance above to switch methods and avoid repeated requests that can extend the block.
In all cases, do not continue making many repeated sign-in or code requests, as this can extend or re-trigger temporary security blocks. If none of the available methods work and there is no admin who can reset MFA, the remaining option is to work with Microsoft support (for work/school accounts) or use the sign-in helper and account recovery flows (for personal accounts) to regain access.
