A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
When Microsoft Authenticator asks for a verification code while signing in on the same phone, use one of these methods depending on what the sign-in page is asking for:
- If it is asking to approve a notification (no 6‑digit code box):
- Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on the phone.
- Make sure the app is unlocked (no app lock / screen lock blocking it).
- Check for a sign‑in request banner in the app and tap Approve.
- If it is asking for a 6‑digit code from Authenticator:
- Open Microsoft Authenticator.
- Tap the account name.
- Use the One‑time password code shown under that account on the screen where it is requested.
- If no prompt or code appears in Authenticator:
- Ensure notifications are enabled for Microsoft Authenticator and not set to silent.
- Confirm the phone has internet access (Wi‑Fi or mobile data). If needed, switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data.
- Make sure the app is updated to the latest version.
- Check the phone’s date and time are set correctly (automatic time is recommended).
- If the message says “Authentication did not complete” or similar:
- Unlock the Authenticator app.
- Turn notifications on for the app and try sign‑in again.
- Verify network connection and retry.
- If access is still not possible and there is no other sign‑in method (SMS, email, backup codes) configured:
- For a work or school account, contact the organization’s IT admin and ask them to reset MFA / require re‑register multifactor authentication in Microsoft Entra so Authenticator can be set up again.
- If the account is the only admin on a business tenant and there is no other admin to reset MFA, contact Microsoft support by phone and request the Data Protection team to help reset the authentication methods, as described in the Q&A guidance.
If SMS or email verification is also failing to arrive, check for:
- Possible temporary blocking due to unusual activity or too many repeated code requests.
- Phone blocking texts from unknown numbers; allow such texts and request a new code.
- Junk/spam folder if using email codes, and verify the address/number is correct.
