“How to turn off Copilot in Microsoft 365 Family and Personal subscriptions”

To turn off Copilot in Microsoft 365 Family and Personal subscriptions (when signed in with a personal Microsoft account, such as an outlook.com address), use either the Copilot setting in each app or the privacy settings.

Option 1 – Turn off Copilot per app using “Enable Copilot”

On Windows (Word, Excel, PowerPoint):

1. Open the app (for example, Excel).
2. Go to File > Options > Copilot.
3. Clear the Enable Copilot checkbox.
4. Select OK, then close and restart the app.

On Mac (Word, Excel, PowerPoint):

1. Open the app (for example, Word).
2. From the app menu, go to Preferences > Authoring and Proofing Tools > Copilot.
3. Clear the Enable Copilot checkbox.
4. Close and restart the app.

This disables Copilot features in that app and dims the Copilot icon on the ribbon. Repeat in each app where Copilot should be turned off. To turn Copilot back on, follow the same steps and select Enable Copilot again.

Option 2 – Turn off Copilot via privacy settings (all apps)

On Windows:

1. In any Microsoft 365 app (for example, PowerPoint), go to File > Account > Account Privacy > Manage Settings.
2. Under Connected experiences, clear Turn on experiences that analyze your content.
3. Select OK, then close and restart the app.

On Mac:

1. In any Microsoft 365 app (for example, Word), go to Preferences > Personal Settings > Privacy.
2. In the Privacy dialog, go to Connected Experiences > Manage Connected Experiences.
3. Clear Turn on experiences that analyze your content.
4. Select OK, then close and restart the app.

Changing this privacy setting in one app applies to the other Microsoft 365 apps the next time they are opened.

Notes

• These options apply when signed in with a Microsoft account (for example, outlook.com) on Microsoft 365 Family, Personal, or similar home subscriptions.
• Copilot features cannot be turned off in Designer, Notepad, or Paint.
• Removing the Copilot icon from the ribbon via ribbon customization only hides the button; it does not turn off Copilot functionality.
