I’m stuck in a Microsoft Authenticator loop. Both the web login and the authenticator require each other. Can you reset my MFA registration?

MFA registration cannot be reset directly. The resolution depends on whether this is a work/school (Microsoft Entra ID) account and whether an administrator is available.

    1. If this is a work or school account and there is an admin available
    • Ask an administrator in the organization to reset MFA so that new methods can be registered:
      1. Go to the Azure portal and open Microsoft Entra ID.
      2. Navigate to Users > select the affected user.
      3. Go to Authentication methods.
      4. Select Require re-register multifactor authentication.
    • After this, sign in again; the account will be prompted to set up Microsoft Authenticator (and/or other methods) from scratch.
    1. If this is a work or school account and there is no other admin
    • If the affected account is the only global admin and is locked in an Authenticator loop with no alternative methods, Microsoft’s Data Protection team must intervene.
    • Call Microsoft support using the regional Customer service phone numbers and request a ticket to the Data Protection team for MFA reset/tenant recovery, as described in the Q&A guidance. Frontline support will verify identity and escalate to Data Protection, who can reset MFA registration so that new methods can be configured.
    1. If repeated attempts are blocking sign-in
    • Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication may temporarily block further attempts after many failures. Wait and try again later, or use a different MFA method if one is available.
    1. If this is a personal account
    • The provided context only covers work/school (Entra ID) and business scenarios. For personal accounts, use the standard Microsoft account recovery and support paths outside of this guidance.

MFA registration itself must be reset by an administrator in Microsoft Entra ID or, when that is impossible, by Microsoft’s Data Protection team via a support ticket. It cannot be reset from within the Authenticator loop alone.
