Restoring an account

Restoring access depends on how Rockstar Social Club was set up with Microsoft Authenticator and what backup/security info is still available.

1. Check if Microsoft Authenticator backup can be restored
   • If the Rockstar Social Club account was in Microsoft Authenticator on the old phone and backup was enabled on the same platform (iOS→iOS or Android→Android only), restore the Authenticator backup:
     • On iOS: ensure iCloud Drive, iCloud Keychain, and iCloud Backup are enabled, then install Authenticator and sign in so it can restore your saved accounts. After restore, one-time password (OTP) codes for 3rd‑party accounts like Rockstar will be available again.
     • On Android: open Authenticator and choose Restore from backup or Begin recovery, then sign in with the same personal Microsoft account used for backup.
   • Note: Backup/restore only works on the same device type; iOS backups cannot be restored on Android and vice versa.
2. Understand what Authenticator can and cannot restore
   • For 3rd‑party accounts such as Rockstar Social Club, Authenticator backs up and restores the time‑based one‑time password codes.
   • If backup was not enabled, the codes cannot be recovered from Microsoft Authenticator; the Rockstar account must be re‑registered with a new 2FA method directly on Rockstar’s side.
3. Use Rockstar’s own recovery options
   • If Authenticator codes are lost and no backup exists, use Rockstar Social Club’s account recovery or security options (email, SMS, backup codes, or support) to:
     • Prove ownership of the account.
     • Remove the old 2‑step verification configuration.
     • Add Microsoft Authenticator again by scanning a new QR code.
4. Prevent this in future
   • After regaining access, enable backup in Microsoft Authenticator so 3rd‑party OTP accounts are saved and can be restored if the phone is lost or replaced.
