Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
When switching from Microsoft 365 Personal to Microsoft 365 Family, only one home subscription remains active on a single Microsoft account at a time. The remaining time on the original subscription is automatically converted and added (prorated) to the new subscription rather than being billed as two full, parallel subscriptions.
Billing views can temporarily show both subscriptions or prorated adjustments (refund for the old plan period and charge for the new plan period) in the same charge cycle, which can look like two full charges. The actual amount owed is adjusted so that billing reflects only the upgraded subscription over time, not two full overlapping subscriptions.
To verify:
- Go to the Services & subscriptions page at https://account.microsoft.com/services while signed in with the same Microsoft account used for the upgrade.
- Confirm that only Microsoft 365 Family is shown as the current active subscription and check the renewal date and price.
- Review the order history there to see any prorated refund/charge entries related to the switch.
If the account shows two active home subscriptions at the same time or the charges still appear as two full, separate renewals after the billing cycle closes, contact Microsoft Support so an agent can review the billing and correct it if needed.
