A Microsoft file hosting and synchronization service.
OneDrive storage is tied to the Microsoft account, not to the apps installed on the PC. Uninstalling Microsoft 365 and the OneDrive sync app does not remove the cloud storage or the files already stored there, and the free allowance is 5 GB. If Microsoft is sending “out of storage” or “0 bytes over 5 GB” emails, that means the Microsoft cloud storage for that account is full or nearly full, even if Gmail accounts show plenty of space.
To delete files from OneDrive, the Microsoft account that owns the storage must be signed in, even if OneDrive was never used intentionally. Windows setup often creates or links a Microsoft account and may have turned on OneDrive backup for Desktop, Documents, or Pictures automatically, which can fill the 5 GB with files that appear to be “not put there.”
Steps to clear storage:
- Sign in to the correct Microsoft account in a web browser (the one that receives the storage emails), then:
- Go to OneDrive and view what is taking up space: View files.
- Delete unwanted files and folders.
- Go to the OneDrive Recycle bin and select Empty recycle bin: Open your OneDrive Recycle bin.
- Allow up to 24 hours for the quota to update.
- If the “Microsoft Unified Storage is full” or similar warning continues after deleting files and emptying the OneDrive recycle bin, check other cloud content tied to the same account:
- Outlook.com mailbox and attachments (if any) using the Outlook storage tools described under How to reduce Outlook storage.
- If still over quota after removing everything possible, either:
- Keep deleting more content until under 5 GB, or
- Buy more storage if continued use of the account and cloud services is needed.
The OneDrive storage itself cannot be deleted without deleting the Microsoft account; it is a built-in part of the account. Only files and folders within that storage can be removed.
