A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Authenticator codes cannot be recreated on a new phone unless a backup or recovery method was set up on the old device, or each account is re-registered individually.
Use these options depending on how the accounts were configured:
- Try restoring from Authenticator backup (if it was enabled)
- On the new phone, open Microsoft Authenticator.
- On Android, select Restore from backup or Begin recovery before signing in. If already signed in, sign out first.
- Sign in with the same personal Microsoft account that was used as the recovery account on the old phone.
- The app will restore:
- For Microsoft personal accounts and 3rd‑party accounts that use one-time password codes, the OTP codes themselves.
- For work/school and passwordless accounts, only the account names; each will show “Sign in to restore your account” and must be signed in again to complete setup.
- If “Restore from backup” does not appear
- Remove or sign out of all accounts in Authenticator on the new phone.
- Close and reopen the app; the Restore from backup / Begin recovery option should appear.
- If no backup was ever configured
- Codes cannot be copied from the old device remotely.
- For each account (Microsoft, work/school, or 3rd‑party like Amazon, Facebook, Gmail), use that service’s account recovery/sign‑in help to:
- Sign in using alternative verification (email, SMS, recovery codes, etc.).
- Remove the old Authenticator registration.
- Add the new phone as a fresh Authenticator device.
- If locked out of a Microsoft account and have lost all security info
- If the password is known but all security info is lost, start sign‑in, choose I don't have any of these at the “Verify your identity” step, and follow the process to replace security info. After replacement, sign‑in is blocked for 30 days while security info updates.
- If the password is not known and security info is unavailable, use the Microsoft account recovery form as described in the guidance.
There is no online portal that can simply “show” the old Authenticator codes; either backup recovery must be used, or each account’s MFA must be reset through its own recovery process.
