Hi everyone. For those of you that use Microsoft authenticator to login to their platforms, have you ever ran into the issue where when the authenticator sends a number to your phone and your supposed to enter it and it work correctly. Mine when I complete it gives me an error message, and times out. Just last week it worked for me and now for some reason it doesn't. Should I remove the authenticator off my phone and go through the process of logging in or what would be best? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

When Microsoft Authenticator suddenly stops completing logins and shows an error or times out after entering the number, the issue is usually with notifications, network, app version, or device settings rather than the account itself. Removing the app should be a last resort because it can make signing in harder if there is no backup method.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Check basic connectivity and app version
      1. Make sure the phone has a stable internet connection. If using mobile data, switch to Wi‑Fi; if on Wi‑Fi, try mobile data. Ensure Airplane mode is off.
      2. Open Authenticator, go to Settings and confirm App updates is turned on, and that the app is updated to the latest version. Older than 12 months is not supported.
    2. Fix notification and battery settings
      1. In Authenticator, go to Settings > Notification Settings and ensure Show notifications is turned on.
      2. Turn off battery optimization for Authenticator from the app’s Settings (or from the device’s battery optimization list) to improve sync and notification reliability.
      3. On the phone, confirm it is not in Do Not Disturb/Quiet mode and that other apps can receive notifications.
    3. Check device time and OS state
      1. Ensure the device Date & time are correct and set to automatic. If the clock is wrong, codes and approvals can fail or appear expired.
      2. Restart the phone after fixing time settings and try the sign‑in again.
    4. Address “Authentication did not complete”–type failures If the error resembles “Authentication did not complete,” check:
      1. Authenticator is unlocked when trying to approve.
      2. Notifications are not silent/blocked; if using SMS as backup, check text messages for codes that may have arrived silently.
      3. The app is updated and the network is working (switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data if needed).
    5. If push still fails
      1. Try a different verification method offered on the sign‑in page (SMS, email, or another method) to complete sign‑in once.
      2. After successfully signing in to the account’s security/MFA settings, remove and re‑add the Authenticator method from there, then scan the new QR code in the app.
    6. When to remove and reinstall the app Only remove Authenticator after confirming there is at least one working alternative sign‑in method (SMS, email, backup codes, or another device). Then:
      1. Remove the account from Authenticator.
      2. Uninstall and reinstall Authenticator.
      3. Sign in again and add the account using the QR code from the account’s security page.

If none of these steps work and the app continues to time out or fail after entering the number, contact Support for personal accounts or the organization’s IT admin for work/school accounts so they can reset the sign‑in methods.
