Follow these steps depending on what’s blocking the update.

    1. Check if the subscription is past due
    • Go to Services & subscriptions at https://account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the same Microsoft account used for Excel.
    • If the subscription shows Past due, select Pay now.
    • On the payment screen, either:
      • Update the existing payment method (new expiry date, CVV, billing address), or
      • Add a new way to pay if the card number changed or the old card is no longer valid.
    • After the payment option is set, select Next to complete payment.
      • Note: Gift cards, subscription cards, or Microsoft account balance can’t be used to pay a past-due subscription.
    1. Update the payment method for recurring billing
    • Still on Services & subscriptions, find the Microsoft 365 subscription and select Manage.
    • Select Change how you pay.
      • If Change how you pay is missing, recurring billing is off and the current term is already paid; the subscription will just end at expiry.
      • If there is a Pay now option instead, clear the past-due balance first.
    • In Change how you pay, either choose an existing payment method or select Add a new way to pay and follow the prompts.
    1. If the site won’t save or accept the payment method
    • If you see messages like “Payment is past due. There is a problem with your payment method” or “information cannot be saved”:
      • Confirm the card has sufficient funds and that international/online and recurring transactions are allowed.
      • If the card continues to be declined, use a different card or contact the bank to remove any block.
    • If the page won’t load or respond:
      • Sign out of all Microsoft/Azure sessions.
      • Open an InPrivate/Incognito window in the browser and try again.
      • If needed, try another browser or clear cached cookies.
    1. If multi-factor authentication is required by the bank
    • If an email was received saying multi-factor authentication is needed to process the payment, follow the instructions in that email to complete the bank’s verification (code via SMS/email, etc.).
    • If the code doesn’t arrive or doesn’t work, request a new code and try again; if it still fails, contact the bank to verify the contact details on the card.
    1. If it still won’t update
    • If the card is from a different country/region than the account’s country/region, it can’t be added; use a payment method issued in the same country/region.
    • If none of the above works, contact Microsoft Support or Microsoft Billing Support so they can review the billing profile and fix any account-side issue.

Once the past-due balance is paid and the payment method is valid, Excel access should continue without interruption.
