Because both PCs use the same Microsoft account, the password for that account is the same everywhere. The old PC is only asking for security questions because it’s using a local account password flow, not the online Microsoft account reset flow.

Use these approaches depending on what kind of account is on the old PC and what access is still available.

    1. Reset the Microsoft account password (if it’s an online account)
    • On any device with a browser (including the working PC), go to the Microsoft account password reset page: Reset password.
    • Follow the steps:
      • Enter the Microsoft account email/phone and select Next.
      • Choose a verification method (email, phone, etc.) and complete the code verification.
      • Set a new password.
    • Then go back to the old PC and sign in with the new Microsoft account password.

If the sign-in page for the old PC is still trying to use a PIN, select Sign-in options and choose Password, then enter the new Microsoft account password.

If there is trouble receiving verification codes or no access to the security info, use the sign-in helper and recovery guidance:

    • I can't sign in to my Microsoft account
    • If all security info is lost, follow the steps under If you don't know your password in the verification code troubleshooting article and submit the recovery form.
    1. If the old PC is using a local account (not a Microsoft account) If the username on the old PC is a local account and not the Microsoft email address, Windows will ask for security questions instead of online verification.

    Options:

    A. Reset the local account password from the sign-in screen

    • At the sign-in screen, select the password entry button.
    • Select OK then Reset password.
    • Answer the security questions that were set when the account was created.

If the security questions are forgotten, this path will not work.

    B. Reset the local account password from another administrator account on the same PC If there is another administrator account on the old PC:

    1. Sign in with that admin account.
    2. Open Computer Management.
    3. Expand Local Users and Groups > Users.
    4. Right-click the user that needs access and select Set Password….
    5. Enter and confirm a new password.

Then sign out and log into the old account with the new password.

If there is no other admin account and the security questions cannot be answered, the only supported option in the provided guidance is to reset the PC, which will remove apps and potentially data. That is a last resort if the data is not backed up elsewhere.

    1. If the issue is specifically with a PIN on the old PC If the old PC is stuck on a PIN and the PIN is forgotten:
    • On the sign-in screen, select Sign-in options and choose Password instead of PIN, then use the Microsoft account password (after resetting it as in step 1 if needed).
    • If I forgot my PIN is available under the PIN box, select it and follow the instructions. If it fails, signing in with the password first is required before changing the PIN.
    1. If all recovery options fail If the Microsoft account password cannot be reset (no access to security info, recovery form fails) and there is no other admin account on the old PC, Windows will eventually require a device reset to regain access. Before doing that, if the drive is not encrypted with BitLocker and can be removed, data backup by a technician using another machine may be possible, but that is outside the scope of the provided documentation.
