My main account has been locked for an unknown amount of time.

Hello, I was randomly on one day. I assume the reason I was locked out was because I kept trying this Xbox Card (before knowing it wasn't activated.) but it kept not working, so i kept trying. Next thing I know, I'm locked out of my account first on my Xbox, now all the other devices?

I pressed "next" to try to get it back, which it said the account was unblocked. then not even 10 seconds later, it said I was blocked still. This was hours ago

I managed to change the password due to it having a separate email associated with it.

I'm stressing out here because I don't know how long I'm waiting for and I saw people saying they've been waiting months for their accounts to be unlocked.

Please someone help me!

The account is locked because Microsoft detected activity that might violate the Microsoft Services Agreement or looks unusual or risky. Multiple failed or repeated actions (such as repeated attempts with a non-activated card or other unusual sign-in or usage patterns) can trigger an automatic temporary block.

Key points from the documented behavior:

    1. Why the account is locked
      • Accounts are locked when activity appears to violate the Microsoft Services Agreement or looks suspicious, including:
        • Unusual activity or sign-in patterns.
        • High volume of repeated requests or actions.
        • Other behavior that Microsoft systems classify as risky.
      • This can result in a temporary or, in some cases, longer block on sign-in or verification.
    2. What to do right now
      1. Try to unlock via the standard flow:
        • Go to https://account.microsoft.com and sign in to request a security code, then follow the on-screen steps to unlock the account.
        • A phone number that can receive SMS can be used; it does not need to be previously associated with the account.
      2. If the sign-in page shows that the account is locked and there is an aka.ms/ link for reinstatement:
        • Select that link and complete the account reinstatement form as instructed.
        • After submitting, wait for the Microsoft Online Safety team to review and respond by email. Do not submit multiple forms in parallel, as that can slow down processing.
      3. If a “Try another verification method” or similar block appears when using verification codes:
        • Try a different verification method already configured on the account (alternate email instead of SMS, or vice versa).
        • Try a different network (switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data, or use another Wi‑Fi network).
        • Avoid repeated attempts in a short period, as this can extend or worsen the block.
    3. How long the block can last and what to expect
      • Some blocks caused by unusual activity or high request volume are temporary and can clear automatically after a waiting period.
      • Guidance for these blocks:
        • Wait at least 24 hours without further attempts if repeatedly blocked.
        • If still blocked, wait longer (up to about a week) before trying again, while avoiding frequent retries that can reset the timer.
      • For reinstatement forms:
        • After submitting the Microsoft account recovery or reinstatement form, a response is typically sent to the working contact email within about 24 hours with either:
          • Instructions to sign back in if verification succeeded, or
          • A notice that ownership could not be verified, in which case the form can be retried (up to two times per day) with more accurate details.
    4. If verification codes are not working or not arriving
      • Use the Security basics page (https://account.microsoft.com/security) and choose Update info to adjust security info, if access is available.
      • If using another Microsoft email as the alternate address, sign in to that account in a separate private/incognito browser window so both accounts can stay signed in while retrieving the code.
      • Be aware that if the account is under a security lockout, verification messages may not work until the lockout is resolved.
    5. Important limitations
      • Support agents and forum moderators cannot directly unlock accounts or bypass security; only the automated unlock/recovery and reinstatement processes can restore access.
      • Multiple or aggressive attempts (password resets, verification requests, form submissions) can trigger or extend blocks, so spacing out attempts and waiting the recommended time is important.

In practice, the next steps are:

    1. Use https://account.microsoft.com to attempt the standard unlock with a security code.
    2. If the page indicates the account is locked for terms/suspicious activity and shows an aka.ms/ reinstatement link, complete that form once carefully and wait for the email response.
    3. If repeatedly seeing blocks or “try another verification method,” stop trying for at least 24 hours (and up to several days) before retrying from a usual device and network.
