Locking down a child account in Microsoft family

Hi,

I have set up a laptop for my child in Microsoft Family with a standard user and a local pin to log in and 2FA enabled with my phone. He had his previous Microsoft account stolen by a hacker who convinced him to go into his account security settings and disable his 2FA (!!) (which pointed to the authentication app on my phone). I have tried to see if I can lock down his ability to change his 2fa settings, but it seems all he needs is his local laptop pin and he can access his Microsoft account with no restrictions and the 2fa is not triggered either. Any ideas how i can lock this down?

Thanks!

To enhance the security of your child's Microsoft account and prevent unauthorized changes to the 2FA settings, consider the following steps:

    1. Change the Microsoft Account Password: Ensure that you change the password for your child's Microsoft account to something strong and unique. This will prevent access by anyone who might have the old password.
    2. Set Up Family Safety Features: Utilize the Microsoft Family Safety features to manage your child's account. This includes setting restrictions on account settings and monitoring their activity.
    3. Remove Local PIN Access: If possible, consider removing the local PIN access or changing the account type to limit the permissions. This may help in preventing your child from accessing sensitive settings without your approval.
    4. Enable Account Recovery Options: Make sure that the recovery options for the account are set up correctly, including a secondary email or phone number that only you have access to.
    5. Educate Your Child: Discuss the importance of account security with your child, emphasizing the risks of disabling 2FA and the importance of not sharing account information with others.
    6. Monitor Account Activity: Regularly check the account activity for any unauthorized changes or logins. This can help you catch any suspicious activity early.

By implementing these measures, you can help secure your child's account and reduce the risk of unauthorized access to their Microsoft account settings.
