How do I connect my 365 account to my gmail?

I recently received an email saying I'd run out of cloud storage on my main Gmail account. I have a 365 account registered to my Outlook email, but I need to connect the two so that I can share my 365 subscription, as I understandably don't want to cancel that subscription just to pay for it again on my other email.

To connect your Microsoft 365 account to your Gmail, you will need to follow these steps:

    1. Enable IMAP for Gmail: Make sure IMAP is enabled in your Gmail settings. You can do this by signing into your Gmail account, going to Settings, selecting the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab, and ensuring that Enable IMAP is selected.
    2. Turn on 2-Step Verification: You need to enable 2-Step Verification for your Gmail account. Sign in to your Gmail account, go to My Account, then Sign-in & security, and under Password & sign-in method, choose 2-Step verification. Follow the prompts to set it up.
    3. Create an App Password: Once 2-Step Verification is enabled, you will need to create an app password. In the My Account section, go to Sign-in & security, select App passwords, and generate a new password. This password will be used to connect your Gmail to Microsoft 365.
    4. Add Your Gmail Account to Outlook: Open Outlook and go to File > Add Account. Enter your Gmail address and when prompted for a password, use the app password you generated earlier instead of your Gmail password.
    5. Complete the Setup: Follow the prompts to complete the setup and ensure that your Gmail account is now connected to your Microsoft 365 account.

By following these steps, you should be able to connect your Microsoft 365 account to your Gmail, allowing you to share your subscription without needing to cancel it.

    Hi, I'm John!

Just to be clear, you can’t directly connect or merge a Microsoft 365 account with a Gmail account. Your 365 subscription stays tied to the Outlook/Microsoft account that bought it.

    They work as separate services.

If your Gmail storage is full, you’ll need to manage or upgrade Google storage separately.

Let me know what you’re mainly trying to do, and I’ll try to guide you.

Thank you for letting me know.

Are your files currently saved on the Gmail-based Microsoft account’s OneDrive, or on the Outlook one?

If your Microsoft account is already using your Gmail address as the sign-in email, you still can’t “connect” or merge it with your Microsoft 365 subscription that’s on your Outlook account. Microsoft doesn’t allow combining two separate Microsoft accounts.

Each Microsoft account can only have one main subscription.

So if your 365 is on your Outlook account, it can’t be transferred to the Gmail-based Microsoft account.

    Your options are:

    • Keep using the 365 subscription on your Outlook account
    • Share the subscription with your Gmail-based account
    • Or move your files to the account that has 365
