How do I check the progress of my support case if I can't log into anything because my Authenticator is not working?

Hello,

Is there any way to check the progress on my support ticket if I can't log into my Microsoft account or my Outlook? I am writing from a different email right now, not the one I have issues with.

The issue I need help with is the fact that my Authenticator is not showing notifications or verification codes, so I am locked out of everything. After 2 days of digging, I finally found a phone number and, after a very frustrating conversation with AI, managed to report my issue and get a case number, plus a promise that a support engineer would contact me within 24 hours via text to my phone number. Well, it's been 48 hours and nothing.

I cannot log into the account I use for my business. Basically, all my business correspondence has been on hold for days. The process has been extremely frustrating.

I would also like to understand what logic lies behind making the Authenticator the only way to get into accounts. My app is NOT WORKING PROPERLY. All the routes to logging in end with the Authenticator. The alternative method of logging in through the Authenticator by means of code ALSO REQUIRES THE AUTHENTICATOR.

What is the app stops working, like in my case?????? What if I lose my phone or it breaks??????? It is beyond me how Microsoft could develop a solution THIS BAD. IT IS AWFUL. CHOOSING MICROSOFT AS A HOST FOR MY BUSINESS EMAIL WAS A TERRIBLE DECISION I DEEPLY REGRET.

I NEED TO GET INTO MY ACCOUNT. I'VE BEEN LOCKED OUT FOR 5 DAYS. PLEASE ADVISE.

Hello @Emilija Micković

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A Community!

Thank you so much for taking the time to share what you’ve been going through. I’m truly sorry for the stress and disruption this situation has caused you. Being unable to access your business account for several days is incredibly frustrating, and I completely understand how upsetting and exhausting this must feel.

I also want to sincerely apologize for the delay in response from support. As far as I know, they're currently experiencing a very high volume of cases, and this can unfortunately slow down the assignment process. At the moment, it may take around 5–7 days for your ticket to be assigned to a support engineer in your region. I know this is far from ideal, especially given the impact on your business, and I truly appreciate your patience.

Regarding the Microsoft Authenticator requirement: I understand how discouraging it feels when the very security feature meant to protect your account becomes a barrier. The verification code is required because it is one of the strongest safeguards to ensure that only you can access your account. While this adds protection, it also means that when the app stops working or a device becomes unavailable, it can cause situations like the one you’re experiencing now.

If your phone is lost, damaged, reset, or if you no longer have access to the Authenticator app, and you are the sole admin on the account, the only team authorized to help restore access is the Microsoft Data Protection Team. They have the necessary tools and permissions to verify your identity and assist with regaining access securely.

I also want to be fully transparent with you: As a forum moderator, I unfortunately do not have access to your tenant, account details, or internal systems. This means I’m unable to directly reset MFA, access your subscription, or make changes on your behalf. Only the Data Protection Team has the permissions required to resolve these types of lockout situations. I’m very sorry for the limitations here. I truly wish I could do more directly.

To support you the best I can from here, could you please send me your ticket (case) number via private message? Once I have it, I can at least monitor the case from the outside, offer guidance, and help ensure it’s moving in the right direction. User's image

Thank you again for your patience, and I’m genuinely sorry for the difficulties you’ve faced. I’m here to support you however I can until you’re fully back into your account.

So in case someone else shows up on here with the same issue, here's what I did.

As far as I can tell, the only way to request support is by calling one of these numbers: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/customer-service-phone-numbers-c0389ade-5640-e588-8b0e-28de8afeb3f2

I first tried my local one, but the automated AI chat bot was translated into my language so poorly it was impossible to communicate with. So I called the US number and after about 15 minutes of back and forth with the chat bot managed to open a support ticket. The call will cost me about 10 dollars since it's not toll free if you're calling from outside of the US (would appreciate a refund in the form of credit towards my subscription).

The chat bot said someone would contact me with 24 hours. 48 passed and I decided to seek help on here. After that, an agent reached out, and I was contacted by a support specialist the next day to do a verification call. That was on Friday. I was contacted again on Monday by the same specialist who walked me through regaining access to my account.

All this, from figuring out how to contact support to final solution, took 7 days. Yes, the problem was solved, but Microsoft really needs to 1) reconsider the Authenticator and 2) work on their user experience.

I have to say, the actual people who assisted me were great. But the whole system is definitely not user-friendly.

If you're unable to log into your Microsoft account due to issues with the Authenticator app, there are a couple of steps you can take to check the progress of your support case:

    1. Contact Microsoft Support Again: Since you have already reported your issue and received a case number, you can try calling the support hotline again. When you call, provide your case number and explain that you are unable to access your account due to the Authenticator issue. This may help expedite your request.
    2. Use a Different Method to Contact Support: If calling is not effective, consider using the Microsoft support chat option. You can access this through the Microsoft support website. Even if you cannot log in, you may be able to initiate a chat by selecting the appropriate options for account recovery or support.
    3. Trial Tenant Workaround: As a last resort, you can create a trial Microsoft 365 tenant. This will allow you to access the Admin Center and submit a support ticket regarding your locked account. Make sure to mention your original account details in the ticket to help the support team assist you.
    4. Wait for the Support Engineer: Since you were promised a follow-up from a support engineer, it may be worth waiting a bit longer. However, if you do not hear back soon, following up as mentioned above would be advisable.

It's understandable how frustrating this situation can be, especially when it affects your business operations. If you need further assistance, don't hesitate to reach out to Microsoft support again.
