Surface Book 3 screen battery drains while other battery is 100% and surface is connected to charging power. It drains to 0% and then I have to reset it and then it starts charging screen battery. Is there help for this?

I have checked drivers and settings, but everything seams normal

    Hi zopic,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum. I understand how disruptive it can be to see the screen (clipboard) battery drain to 0% even while the device is connected to power—especially when everything appears correctly configured.

Based on the symptoms you described and the troubleshooting you’ve already completed, this behavior can occasionally occur with Surface Book devices that use two separate batteries (one in the screen and one in the keyboard base). In some situations, the system prioritizes charging the keyboard battery and temporarily stops charging the screen battery until the connection is refreshed.

Below are some additional recommended steps to help address this behavior. I understand that a few of these may already have been suggested by the Q&A Assist, but I’d like to walk through them again with some added context:
Step 1: Manually reinstall the latest Surface Book 3 firmware

Even if Windows Update says the system is up to date, it’s important to reinstall the full Surface Book 3 Drivers and Firmware package directly from Microsoft’s support website.

This package includes updates for the Surface UEFI and Embedded Controller, which are responsible for power and battery management between the screen and keyboard. If that firmware gets out of sync, Windows drivers can still look fine, but charging behavior may be incorrect.

Reinstalling the firmware refreshes those components and can fix charging logic issues that don’t show up as errors.

Step 2: Detach and reattach the screen while plugged in

With the device powered on and connected to the charger:

    • Press the detach key and remove the screen
    • Leave it detached for about 10 seconds
    • Reattach it firmly and make sure it locks in properly

This forces the system to re‑establish communication between the two batteries. In many cases, this restores charging to the screen battery without needing a full restart.

Step 3: Avoid leaving the device plugged in when the base battery is already at 100%

When the keyboard (base) battery reaches 100%, the system may temporarily stop charging the screen battery, even while still connected to power.

    If possible:

    • Try unplugging and reconnecting the charger once the base battery is full
    • Avoid leaving the device plugged in overnight or for long periods when the base battery stays at 100%

This helps encourage both batteries to charge more evenly.

Step 4: Check the screen battery’s health

If this issue happens often, the screen (clipboard) battery may have some capacity wear. You can confirm this by generating a Windows battery report and comparing the battery’s original capacity with its current capacity.

    • Press Windows + X then select Command Prompt (Admin)
    • Type powercfg /batteryreport and press Enter
    • Open C:\Users\YourUserName\battery‑report.html
    • Under Installed batteries, compare Design Capacity vs Full Charge Capacity for the screen battery

If there’s a large drop, the system may limit or pause charging, which can cause the screen battery to drain unexpectedly.

Please keep me posted on how it goes and feel free to reach out if you need any further assistance.
