the autheticator app wont work on my new phone

I have a new Samsung Galaxy s25 and can't get the Authenticator to work (it used to work on my previous phone). It asks me to use the app (which I cant get to work) to get it to work - it seems to be going round in circles. Then it offers to help me via sms which then requires password change - but it still does not work.
