To whom this will concern,

I have tried endlessly to fix this problem very confusing situation where my iphone logged my authenticator app out. I still have access to my emails on both computer and phone but I can't change settings to get a password. Any help would be very appreciated.

I am currently locked out of completing Microsoft security verification after being signed out of the Microsoft Authenticator app, while my account is configured for passwordless / MFA sign-in.

Current situation:

  • My Microsoft account is still actively signed in on trusted devices (Outlook Web on desktop and mail access on mobile).

However, when attempting to access account security settings or re-add Microsoft Authenticator, Microsoft requires identity verification.

The only verification option presented is SMS to my registered phone number.

When entering the correct last 4 digits and selecting “Get code,” the system consistently returns “Unavailable right now.”

Issues encountered:

Microsoft Authenticator was signed out or desynchronised, so I cannot approve sign-in requests.

Passkey / passwordless prompts appear, but no usable passkey exists on my device, creating a dead end.

SMS verification is currently unavailable, preventing password reset, security changes, or adding a new verification method.

Security pages (account.microsoft.com/security) require verification even though I am already signed in elsewhere.

Retrying SMS multiple times does not work and risks temporary account lock.

Troubleshooting already attempted:

Tried multiple browsers (Chrome, Edge) and private/incognito sessions.

Tried different networks (Wi-Fi and mobile data).

Attempted password reset via account.live.com/password/reset.

Attempted to re-add Authenticator from account security settings.

Attempted Outlook → View Account → Security path.

Confirmed phone number is correct and previously functional.

Avoided excessive retries to prevent lockout.

Impact:

I am unable to manage account security, change password, or re-register Microsoft Authenticator.

Account access is partially functional (email works) but security management is blocked.

This appears to be a Microsoft-side SMS verification outage combined with a passwordless/MFA configuration issue.

What I am seeking:

A temporary verification bypass, or

Manual reset of MFA / Authenticator methods, or

Ability to add a new verification method (backup email or Authenticator) without SMS.

This account is active, secure, and accessible on trusted devices. The issue is not forgotten credentials but a verification method failure.I am currently locked out of completing Microsoft security verification after being signed out of the Microsoft Authenticator app, while my account is configured for passwordless / MFA sign-in.
