It won't let me use Office Home 2024 unless I sign in.

I paid for Office Home 2024. It downloaded and installed but I can't use it unless I sign in which I don't want. My understanding was that Office Home 2024 was a standalone suite. I can't get past the signin screen to use Word. What do I need to do? Windows 11, brand new laptop.

I was signed in when I downloaded the purchased Home Office. Successful download. When trying to use XL, it says I must sign in (even though I'm still signed in). When trying to sign in, it responds that my account doesn't exist. HELP!

The important truth

Office Home 2024 still requires a one-time sign-in to activate
You do NOT need to stay signed in afterward
Microsoft uses sign-in only to bind the license once, even for perpetual Office

There is no supported way to use Office 2024 on Windows 11 without activating it once.

One-time sign-in, then remove the account (recommended)

You can activate Office once, then completely disconnect it.

Steps:

On the sign-in screen, sign in once with any Microsoft account (it can be a throwaway account created just for activation)

Office activates and opens Word

Immediately remove the account from Office:

Word → File → Account
Under User Information → Sign out
Under Connected Services → Remove account

Close Word

Reopen Word

Result:

Office stays activated

No Microsoft account attached

No syncing, no cloud features

Works fully offline

This is the only supported “offline” end state for Office 2024.

I already deleted the suite. Not only did it require signin, it said it would sign me into lots of other things too, and no way to say No. I did not want to search my whole system for places it had signed me in, which it previously did on my other laptop even though I never knowingly work while signed in. In that case, it was weeks or months later when I accidentally saw MS had me signed into stuff I never requested or wanted and I had thought I was totally signed out. I would rather muddle along with non-MS word processing programs.

Completely understandable and you’re not imagining things. What you experienced is real, and what you wanted used to exist. It doesn’t now.
