I paid for Office Home 2024. It downloaded and installed but I can't use it unless I sign in which I don't want. My understanding was that Office Home 2024 was a standalone suite. I can't get past the signin screen to use Word. What do I need to do? Windows 11, brand new laptop.

    Thanks for sharing the details!

    The important truth

    • Office Home 2024 still requires a one-time sign-in to activate
    • You do NOT need to stay signed in afterward
    • Microsoft uses sign-in only to bind the license once, even for perpetual Office

There is no supported way to use Office 2024 on Windows 11 without activating it once.

One-time sign-in, then remove the account (recommended)

You can activate Office once, then completely disconnect it.

    Steps:

On the sign-in screen, sign in once with any Microsoft account (it can be a throwaway account created just for activation)

    Office activates and opens Word

Immediately remove the account from Office:

    • Word → File → Account
    • Under User Information → Sign out
    • Under Connected Services → Remove account

    Close Word

    Reopen Word

    Result:

    Office stays activated

    No Microsoft account attached

    No syncing, no cloud features

    Works fully offline

This is the only supported “offline” end state for Office 2024.

See if this helps. If you need further assistance just let me know.

    Best regards,

    Kimberly

Completely understandable and you’re not imagining things. What you experienced is real, and what you wanted used to exist. It doesn’t now.

To use Office Home 2024, you typically need to sign in with a Microsoft account, even if it is a standalone version. This requirement is part of the activation process for Microsoft Office products. If you're unable to bypass the sign-in screen, here are some steps you can try:

    1. Sign In with a Microsoft Account: If you have a Microsoft account, try signing in. If you don't want to use your personal account, consider creating a new Microsoft account specifically for this purpose.
    2. Check for License Assignment: Ensure that your Office Home 2024 license is properly assigned. You can do this by checking in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center if you have access.
    3. Reinstall Office: If you still face issues, you might want to uninstall and then reinstall Office Home 2024. Use the Microsoft 365 Uninstall troubleshooter to help with this process.
    4. Contact Support: If none of the above steps work, consider reaching out to Microsoft Support for further assistance.

These steps should help you resolve the sign-in issue and allow you to use Office Home 2024 on your Windows 11 laptop.
