2025-11-25T06:12:11.82+00:00 Hello Jan van Graan
As you are experiencing a common issue that nonprofits face when renewing Azure grants, the grant renewal and the sponsorship subscription don’t always sync automatically, which can lead to your subscription reverting to Pay-As-You-Go even though the grant is active.
The Azure Sponsorship grant and the subscription billing profile are linked but managed separately. If the renewal wasn’t properly applied to the existing subscription, Azure defaults to Pay-As-You-Go billing.
This occurs when the grant was activated under a different billing profile, renewal process was completed in the Nonprofit Hub but not linked to the subscription in the Azure portal and the activation deadline or steps were missed (must be done within 90 days of issuance).
To Activate your Azure Sponsorship grant
- Sign in to the Nonprofit Hub by using your validated Microsoft account.
- Go to the Offers tab and locate the Azure $2,000 Sponsorship offer.
- Select the Activate button next to the Azure grant.
- Complete the guided setup. Follow the instructions to:
- Accept the Azure Sponsorship terms.
- Choose whether to activate the credit on an existing billing profile or create a new one.
- Set up your Azure subscription environment.
- Choose whether to activate the credit on an existing billing profile or create a new one.
- Accept the Azure Sponsorship terms.
You can check your balance and view usage from the Microsoft Azure portal:
- Sign in to the Azure portal by using the administrator account that's associated with the grant.
- On the left pane, go to Billing > Payment Methods.
- On the Azure Credits tab, view the current balance and usage details.
If the balance doesn't appear:
- Ensure that you selected the correct billing account or billing profile.
- If necessary, follow the steps in Billing accounts and scopes in the Azure portal to confirm that the right scope is active.
If your nonprofit remains on the legacy sponsorship (including regions for China and India), view your balance in the Azure Sponsorships portal. You must log in with the account owner credentials. Typically, these credentials have the
.onmicrosoft.comemail address that you used during grant setup. The Azure Sponsorships portal displays the remaining balance, usage, and expiration details. If you encounter errors or are unsure which benefits apply to you, submit a support request through our Contact Us form
You do not need to create a new subscription for renewal, credits should apply to the existing one. A valid credit card is required for verification, but charges only apply if you exceed the $2,000 annual grant.
If the grant was applied to the wrong account, support intervention is the only fix.
Kindly let us know if the solution provided worked for you. If you need any further assistance, please feel free to reach out.
Thanks,
Suchitra.

2025-11-25T10:21:46.1033333+00:00 Hello **Jan van Graan
**Go to Azure portal → Cost Management + Billing → Properties, what is the Billing account type? Is it Microsoft Customer Agreement (MCA) or Pay-As-You-Go (MOSP)?
Because the Azure credits tab only appears for MCA billing accounts.
- Are you viewing the correct billing scope at the top of the Cost Management + Billing page? Can you switch to the MCA billing account if available?
- Did you activate the $2,000 nonprofit grant in the Nonprofit Hub under Offers → Azure Sponsorship? Was the activation completed within 90 days?
- Which billing profile did you select during activation? Are you checking the same profile in the Azure portal?
- Do you have Billing profile Owner/Contributor or Reader role? Without these, the credits tab won’t show.
- Can you confirm if your grant is on the legacy Sponsorship platform? If yes, check balance at https://www.microsoftazuresponsorships.com/
- When did you activate the grant? Credits can take up to 24 hours to appear.
Please provide these details along with screenshots.
Thanks,
Suchitra.
