Why is Microsoft account recovery so difficult compared to other services?

I recently had my email hacked and needed to recover many accounts (Steam, Discord, etc.). Every other platform allowed me to regain access quickly and smoothly.

However, recovering my Microsoft account — the one I’ve spent the most money on — has been nearly impossible.

Even though my Microsoft account has 2FA set to my correct email, I am unable to receive the verification code because the account is “locked,” as support told me. This means I cannot complete any normal verification steps.

I have filled out forms multiple times and contacted support repeatedly. Every time I am told the case is “easy” and to wait 72 hours. But even after providing detailed proof that only the real owner could know, I still do not get access back.

I know personal history, old purchases, device locations, and account details that no one but me could possibly know, yet it still isn’t enough.

This recovery system is far more restrictive than any other major service, and it’s incredibly frustrating for legitimate users trying to regain access to their own accounts.

Recovering a Microsoft account can indeed be a challenging process for several reasons, particularly when compared to other services. Here are some factors that contribute to the difficulty:

    1. Security Measures: Microsoft implements strict security protocols to protect user accounts from unauthorized access. This includes two-factor authentication (2FA) and various identity verification methods. While these measures enhance security, they can also complicate the recovery process if users are unable to access their registered email or phone number.
    2. Account Lockouts: If an account is flagged for suspicious activity or if there are multiple failed sign-in attempts, it may be temporarily locked. This can prevent users from receiving verification codes necessary for recovery, as you experienced.
    3. Verification Requirements: Microsoft may require detailed proof of identity that goes beyond what other services ask for. This can include knowledge of past purchases, device locations, and other personal history. While this is intended to protect users, it can be frustrating for legitimate users who have difficulty providing the required information.
    4. Support Response Times: The support process can sometimes be slow, with users waiting extended periods for responses or resolution of their cases. This can add to the frustration, especially when users feel they have provided sufficient evidence of their identity.
    5. Complexity of Account Types: Microsoft accounts can be tied to various services (personal, work, or school accounts), which may have different recovery processes and requirements. This complexity can lead to confusion during recovery attempts.

Overall, while Microsoft’s recovery process is designed to enhance security, it can feel overly restrictive and cumbersome for users trying to regain access to their accounts.
