Migrate B8MS to B8aS V2

I have a Microsoft Azure VM B8MS series on a pay-per-use basis. Now I want to migrate the entire VM to B8aS V2 series on an Annual savings basis. I need complete guidance and support on migration and how to link it to the Annual Savings Plan. I don't want to create a New VM as I will have to move the entire Data again and set up the New VM, so I want to resize it to the new Size.

I’ve reviewed your scenario and here’s a clear summary of what we found and recommended next steps.
- You can check availability of both VM sizes in your region (e.g., East US) with this Azure CLI command:
az vm list-sizes --location eastus --query "[?contains(name, 'B8ms') || contains(name, 'B8as_v2')]" --output tableFrom the output you will see that both Standard_B8ms and Standard_B8as_v2 are available in that region.
From the above screenshot
- The B8ms size includes a local temporary disk (≈ 64 GiB).
- The B8as_v2 size has no local temporary disk (TempStorage = 0).
According to the below Microsoft documentation:
Limitations**:**
You can't resize a VM size that has a local temp disk to a VM size with no local temp disk and vice versa. The only combinations allowed for resizing are:
- VM (with local temp disk) -> VM (with local temp disk); and
- VM (with no local temp disk) -> VM (with no local temp disk).

Workaround/Solution:
What you can do is stop the VM, create snapshot of disk, create disk from snapshot, then create VM from disk, with B8as_v2 as size. Once you verify the new VM is working okay you can delete the old VM and its disk, network interface, snapshot, etc.

When creating the new managed disk from the snapshot, be sure to select the correct disk size and type.
Regarding your Annual Savings Plan:
Once you resize your VM to the B8as_v2 size, and your subscription has the Annual Savings Plan applied for the B-series VMs, your VM usage will automatically be billed at the discounted savings plan rate.
There is no separate manual "linking" needed; usage is matched automatically to your Savings Plan under the subscription.

You can buy a savings plan for an Azure subscription that's of type Enterprise Agreement (MS-AZR-0017P or MS-AZR-0148P), Microsoft Customer Agreement, or Microsoft Partner Agreement. To determine if you're eligible to buy a plan, check your billing type.
Note: The Azure savings plan isn't supported for the China legacy Online Service Premium Agreement (OSPA) platform.
Enterprise Agreement customers:
Saving plan purchasing for Enterprise Agreement customers is limited to:
- Enterprise Agreement admins with write permissions can purchase savings plans from Cost Management + Billing > Savings plan. No subscription-specific permissions are needed.
- Users with subscription owner or savings plan purchaser roles in at least one subscription in the enrollment account can purchase savings plans from Home > Savings plan.

- Users with billing profile contributor permissions or higher can purchase savings plans from Cost Management + Billing > Savings plan experience. No subscription-specific permissions are needed.
- Users with subscription owner or savings plan purchaser roles in at least one subscription in the billing profile can purchase savings plans from Home > Savings plan.
Microsoft Customer Agreement (MCA), Billing Profile Owners can restrict savings plan purchases by disabling the Add Savings Plan policy option in the Azure portal. Beginning in June 2025, Microsoft Customer Agreement (MCA), Billing Profile, and Billing Account Owners will have the ability to purchase savings plans even if the Add Savings plan policy option is disabled in the Azure portal. To change settings, navigate to the Policies menu under Billing Profile.
Microsoft Partner Agreement partners:
Partners can use Home > Savings plan in the Azure portal to purchase savings plans on behalf of their customers.
As of June 2023, partners can purchase an Azure savings plan through the Partner Center. Previously, the Azure savings plan was only supported for purchase through the Azure portal. Partners can now purchase an Azure savings plan through the Partner Center portal or APIs. They can also continue to use the Azure portal.
