All my OneDrive photos disappeared — not deleted, “Restore” only goes back 30 days

Hello,

I’m having a very serious issue with my OneDrive account — all of my photos and files have disappeared even though I never deleted or moved them.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

Checked the Recycle Bin — completely empty.

Used the “Restore your OneDrive” feature — but it only goes back 30 days, and my photos were lost before that.

Verified that I didn’t unlink or unsync my devices.

No local copies remain on my computer or phone.

These were years of personal photos and important files that I trusted OneDrive to keep safe. I haven’t changed any settings or deleted anything myself. It feels like my data just vanished.

I contacted Microsoft support, but they told me the 30-day restore limit means there’s nothing more they can do. I’m really hoping that’s not the end of the road — surely there must be some backend recovery option or escalation path for cases like this where files disappeared without user action.

Can someone from Microsoft or the community please advise if there’s any way to recover this data?

I would be grateful for any help, guidance, or even confirmation that a deeper recovery process is possible. Losing everything like this is incredibly upsetting.

Thank you in advance for your time and support.

Hi, thanks again for confirming those details, that really helps clarify the situation.

Since your OneDrive account is active, used daily, and well within storage limits, and you’ve already checked the Recycle Bin, restore feature, and searched by file types, this rules out the usual causes like inactivity or quota issues.

What you’re experiencing points to a deeper issue that isn’t visible through the standard recovery tools.

The next best step is to escalate this directly to Microsoft Support and request what’s called a One-Time Data Restoration (OTDR). This is a special recovery process handled by their engineering team, and it’s not something regular support agents initiate unless specifically asked. You can start that process here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/contactus. Once you're there, sign in with your Microsoft account, select OneDrive as the product, and choose Technical Support or Files Missing as the issue. In your message, mention that your files disappeared without any deletion or user action, and that you’ve already tried all available recovery options. You can also include folder names or approximate dates when the files were last seen, that helps them locate the missing data more effectively.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time this has happened. The same issue occurred last year, when I lost most of my photos. I use OneDrive across two phones, an iPad, and a laptop, and at that time, I was told only to change my password — but that the files could not be recovered.

After paying €100 per year for this service, it’s extremely disappointing to face the same data loss issue again. Losing personal photos and important files like this — especially when the service is paid and actively used — is not acceptable.

Hi, thank you for reaching out, I understand how important those photos and files are to you, and I want to help you get to the bottom of this.

Based on what you've described, it sounds like the issue may be related to how OneDrive handles storage limits and account activity. If your account exceeded its storage quota for an extended period or was inactive for a long time, OneDrive may have automatically removed files without placing them in the Recycle Bin. This kind of cleanup happens quietly in the background and unfortunately isn’t always reversible through the usual restore options.

Let’s go through a few basic checks first: Please confirm that you’re signed into the correct Microsoft account, and that you’ve checked both the regular OneDrive folders and the Personal Vault (if you’ve used it). Also, try searching for file types like .jpg or .docx directly in OneDrive’s web interface, sometimes files are still there but not showing in expected folders.

To move forward, I’d like to ask a couple of quick things: Do you recall if your OneDrive account was ever full or inactive for a long time? And was this a personal account or part of a work/school subscription? These details will help me figure out if we can push for a deeper recovery option like a backend restoration.

Let me know what you find, and I’ll guide you through the next steps. We’ll do everything we can to explore all possible recovery paths.
